Hi, y'all. This Health & Wellness forum within Taking Flight doesn't seem to get much action lately, but I thought I'd post this for what it's worth.

Six months ago -- May 17 -- I quit smoking for good after a 33-year addiction. I remember seeing posts in this forum from some folks struggling with giving up nicotine, and I could never offer any advice -- Better you than me, fella!!! I'm never giving up my li'l buddy, my cigarette!

But I stumbled across this fabulous book, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr, and it really was like magic. It completely changes the way you think about smoking and makes it easy to quit.

I wasn't even sure that I wanted to quit when I started reading the book, but when I finished it, I was a nonsmoker! It doesn't use scare tactics or anything like that. It just systematically releases you from the nicotine trap -- and you smoke while you read! By the time you are finished, you realize that you have no reason to smoke and that every reason you THOUGHT you had for smoking was a lie. The only reason you smoke is nicotine addiction, which is actually a pretty easy addiction to break once the psychological addiction is gone. And Mr. Carr destroys the psychological addiction while you read and smoke.

Now that I've been nicotine-free for six months, I want to crow about the book to any smokers reading this who are looking for a way out. The book's claims are true. You don't need will power. You don't need substitutes. You certainly don't need the crazy nicotine replacement "therapy" gum, patches, lozenges, etc., where you replace a poison with the same poison.

The book is "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. Check it out!

Yay, Leslie, that's GREAT news!! Congratulations!
And as I'm sitting here typing this, I'm wearing one of those SWA sweatshirts that you brought for all of us at Phoenix Flight Fest! :D Every time I wear it I think of that fun weekend (and your generosity). Seems the shirts are no longer available on SWA's website either...too bad, it's a great shirt to wear with jeans.

Sincerely and with great admiration, I applaud your decision and follow-through to be free of smoking, Leslie. I can't count all the dear people that smoking has taken from me through the years. I hope that this method for quitting becomes wildly popular! I will (gently) tell some people about it ...

Bravo, bravo.

Thanks, Barb and Rebecca. Rebecca, I hope the folks you tell about the book give it a chance. I swear, I never would have quit if not for this book. I am no good at doing difficult things, and I always thought of quitting smoking as difficult. Mr. Carr really makes it EASY.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but ... I think the nicotine replacement therapy industry has a strong interest in promoting the idea that quitting is difficult, and it seems that they have an extremely heavy influence in the public dialog about quitting, and on institutions that purport to help people quit.

Anyway, I hope the book helps your friends! When it was recommended to me, I was like, "You gotta be kidding me ... I'll read it out of curiosity, but I don't believe a book can get me to quit."

But it did. It changed everything. I hope it helps your friends too.

I'm allergic to cigarette smoke...so am always delighted to hear that there is one less person smoking out there! And it's so much better for YOUR health to be cigarette-free too.
