Ok... AGAIN... don't think that I am nuts!!!

And comments from the peanut gallery are duly noted! ha ha

Anyways... does anyone else worry about something other than a plane emergency happening on board an airliner?

What I mean is... sometimes, especially on long flights... I get concerned that I may have some med emergency, like a heart attack or something. And there I am stuck in this plane.

I wonder how they do react to something like that??? Hey, great question for Ray's board.

Anyways... does anyone else get concerned over this???

On my flight to England I did, and the cabin crew said they were prepared for events like that. Did not go into details. That was good enough for me on that flight.

Just wondering....

Actually, I worry more about the people in the middle and aisle seats falling asleep so that I can't get out to go to the BATHROOM! (This has happened on MOST of my longer flights across country and is NOT fun.)

I know that the crew onboard the longer flights are medically trained and have equipment onboard (pretty sure they have a defib machine to "shock" ya back if you have a heart attack).

If they are over land they can always land at the nearest airport for medical assistance.

Mark,

I've never been personally worried about that, but I have been on a flight where someone had a medical emergency. The pilots had us on the ground, at the gate, from cruising altitude in less than 20 minutes and the paramedics were waiting to take the lady off the plane.

I've also been told that most planes are carrying automated defribrilators now and I know that FAs have pretty extensive first aid training. Not to mention there's probably a doctor, a nurse, or someone skilled in first aid flying as a passenger on just about every plane in the sky. And if things go badly, God knows there's a lawyer! :duck

The only emergency that i worry about when flying is my emergency - when i actually do have a heart attack/seizure instead of just spending the whole of the flight feeling like i am gonna havve one...:lol

Mark, I think that question was actually normal(whatever that may be). That's kind of what a lot of anxiety is about. Worrying about the "what ifs. "What if I have a heart attack, What if I can't handle my anxiety and start screaming, what if I take too much meds and drool on the person next to me,etc.
Fa's are well prepared for med. emergencies, they do carry de fibs on planes these days as well as good first aid kits, CPR tools, etc. So, actually if you have to have a heart attack you are probably better off there than most places...now that the drooling on the person next to you may be a problem.
It's so interesting to me what we worry about once we board a plane that we rarely think about in day to day life. :think Monica:coffee

Mark,
You are not nuts (this time).

When my anxiety gets really high, I start having panic attacks which can feel like a heart attack at times. When that happens or when I'm really anxious, I too worry about having a health emergency during flight. Those are the times when you really have to calm yourself down.

Many of us think our fears are unique on this board. I challenge someone to speak their minds on a fear they think no one else has. My money says they are not alone.

Hi Mark,

On one of my flights someone did have severe chest pain, he had a previous history of Cardiac disease but not angina.

They called for doctors and there were none on board, they then asked for nurses and my heart sank too! I have not done cardiac nursing for many years. However I decided I could not stand back as I had perhaps had more knowledge than anyone else on board.

To cut a long story short after I decided I would volunteer so did several others. They had more current cardiac knowledge than myself so I stepped back ( relief!)

The paramedics were notified and we landed within about 20 minutes in Italy.

No intervention was required other than trying to keep family and patient calm. checking pulses.

I have never personally been worried about that (except for motion sickness -- I've never had it, but my sister gets violently ill when encountering any kind of motion...she got sick sleeping on a water bed once).:barf

Something did happen on a plane my sister was on once, however. She was flying to England and said she'd call us when she arrived, and she didn't call and didn't call and didn't call. We were getting worried. When she finally called, I answered the phone, and she told me her flight had been delayed, because on the incoming flight, someone had died. (Not sure how, but nothing to do with the plane). So they had to fill out all of the paperwork and do whatever you have to do before they could load the plane for her flight. I couldn't say anything; it was just so weird!

At this point, my mom took the phone from me and the very first thing she said was, "what took you so long, someone die or something?" :shakehead

Thanks folks for the replys, and Ray also gave me one over on his forum.

It is amazing that an airliner can go from cruise to the gate in under 20 minutes. Fastest ambulance I have ever heard of!
