I started a group on Facebook. It is public so anyone can join.

If you do a search of TakingFlight (one word), you should find it!

Join up!

Hi Ashley!

Thanks for joining the group.

When people join, if you can put what your screen name is on TF on the wall, it will help us know who everyone is.

If you are not a member of TF and want to join the Facebook group, that is fine too. Both sites are open to all!

I left a note on the group site and want to extend it to everyone else. If you have any pictures that you think would look good in the banner rotation, feel free to submit them and we will see if we can use them.

Please make sure they are your own photos.

I will put your screen name on the photo so everyone knows who took it. :)

Scott, How exactly would you like the photos submitted? (to an email address? What dimensions?). (Sorry...I'm not on Facebook, in case you left instructions there. I'm falling behind on "the latest new things"...and don't have enough free time to participate there now.)

You can email them to scott at takingflight.us for now. I will set up a gallery again soon (I hope) so then we can use that for submissions.

Note I will try working with you as best as possible to get the picture in, but the dimensions make it really hard sometimes.

Could you post dimension guidelines? Or should we send you photos that can be easily cropped?

Also...are you looking for aviation-themed photos like we had before (airplanes inside and out), or broadening it to include aerial photos, airport terminals, or even to include vacation destinations, flight fests, ourselves, family pets, etc?

Scott and I talked about that, and discussed broadening it beyond just airplane photos, but aerial shot, in flight shots, boarding the plane, etc.

I think it needs to stay related to commercial aviation, and not go into pets, us sitting on the beach, etc. However personal photos of being on the plane, boarding, at the airport, etc would be related.

O.K. Can you use any of the photos that we have already submitted as attachments on threads for the banner? I've put up quite a few of those (different aspects of flight, including the jetway, aerials, etc). You are welcome to use any of those that you think would work for the banner. :)

The problem is that most of the attached pictures are scaled-down and then compressed with lossy jpeg compression. In that process quite some image detail is lost. If you can cut out a 855 px by 296 px banner picture (or something bigger and then scale down) it will work out reasonably well; however if you need to blow up your cut-out section, results tend to be poor, giving fuzzy images.

In my photo program...this is the shape of 855 X 296 px.
When I cropped by pixels, it only showed part of the plane, so I enlarged the rectangle, keeping the basic proportion. Then when I saved the file, there's a function, "save for web". The maximum allowed width is 800 px. So that is what this is. I don't have any control how it's compressed for the web using that function, but attachments on TF have a size limitation. Most of my photos I've uploaded previously have been around 500-600 px wide, so as to not go over that KB limit. I could also do a regular "save as"...not sure if that would fit as an attachment or not.
If there are any photos that I've already posted as attachments that you want to use, let me know which ones, and I'll see if I can resize them as banners (if THIS works!).

Also...looking at the current banner, it seems that you CAN combine several photos that are more square-shaped to make one long banner. Is that a big headache to make them all fit on the banner? This long banner shape does impose some limits on composition since it's about twice as wide as a "normal" photo, and is more of a "panorama" shape.

Well, I can also save the file for the web by height. But, when I put in "296 px high", and tried to upload it, I got a message that "Your file of 342.9 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 97.7 kb for this filetype.
I will email this file to Scott so you can play with both, and compare quality.

Thanks, Kelley...taking airplane photos is a hobby now (or a passion!), when I want to think about airplanes and flying, but don't have a trip lined up. Or, when I've got extra time at the airport waiting for a flight...it's a way to pass the time, and then share them here later (e.g. the jetway photos).

I remember you had some nice inflight ones of clouds too...so hope you can post some of those when we get the technical details of the banner figured out.

Yes, I loved taking cloud photos. I have a cool video of a thunderstorm off in the distance as well. The plane I was on didn't feel a ripple of turbulence but we could see the thunderstorm quite well.

Yes - all one word just like you typed it.

Facebook has gotten rid of Group pages in the traditional way so I had to create a new Group. It is an open group and named TakingFlight.us. You can join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/136888323081928/
