Andrea wanted me to let everyone on the board know about Jeff (JeffCalifornia). Any and all prayers and good wishes would be appreciated for Jeff, Andrea and the family.
Here is the latest from Andrea:
When he came home (from working in Hawaii) two weeks ago he wasn't well. He was admitted to the hospital last Monday with severe liver failure and gallbladder disease. He went home on Thursday, but he has gotton progressively worse since then. If the kidneys are also failing there is not a lot they can do other than transplant of liver and it will take time that he may not have.

Update from Andrea: Jeff does have hepatorenal syndrome (kidney and liver failure).
From Wikipedia (because I looked it up to get more info):
Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) refers to acute renal failure (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Acute_renal_failure) that occurs in the setting of cirrhosis (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Cirrhosis) or fulminant (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Fulminant) liver failure (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Liver_failure), sometimes also associated with portal hypertension (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Portal_hypertension), usually in the absence of other disease of the kidney (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Kidney).[1] (http://www.takingflight.us/forums/#cite_note-IAC-0)[2] (http://www.takingflight.us/forums/#cite_note-FloWo-1) Hepatorenal syndrome is thought to be caused by an alteration in blood flow and blood vessel tone in the circulation that supplies the intestines (the splanchnic circulation (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Splanchnic_circulation)) and the circulation that supplies the kidney.[3] (http://www.takingflight.us/forums/#cite_note-Arroyo1-2) It is usually indicative of an end-stage of perfusion, or blood flow (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Hemodynamics) to the kidney, due to deteriorating liver (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Liver) function. Patients with hepatorenal syndrome are very ill, and, if untreated, the condition is usually fatal. Treatment usually involves medical therapy or TIPSS (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Transjugular_intrahepatic_portosystemic_shunt) as a bridge to liver transplantation (http://www.takingflight.us/wiki/Liver_transplantation).[2] (http://www.takingflight.us/forums/#cite_note-FloWo-1) However kidneys from patients with hepatorenal syndrome have been used successfully for renal transplant.
I have the hospital information for Jeff if anyone is interested in sending something to him. PM me for more info.
Thanks,
Kelley

Update from Andrea: Jeff does have hepatorenal syndrome (kidney and liver failure).
I'm so sorry to hear this terrible news. The Wikipedia information certainly sounds grim (though perhaps with some bits of hope).
For those who are new, Jeff has been a long-time, valuable member here, and has provided encouragement for many fellow TF'ers, as well as sharing his own experiences and suggestions for dealing with FoF. I enjoyed meeting him and Andrea at two of the Flight Fests...and will be keeping them both in my thoughts in this difficult time. We'll hope that the Drs. can perform a medical miracle.

Been awhile since I posted, but I wanted to pop in after Kelley shared the news.
I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Jeff or Andrea in person, but getting to know him (and indeed, the whole family, through Jeff) on TF has been a real pleasure. It's so hard when bad things happen to good people, and Jeff...he's good people.
I'll be keeping the whole family in my prayers.

Just got another update from Andrea:
Jeff's tests are not improving yet, but we have hope that maybe his kidneys can be stabilized. He is getting all nutrition, fluids and meds through IV/pic line to try and give the digestive system a complete rest.
Please continue to keep Jeff and the family in your prayers.
Thanks,
Kelley

Jeff, please get better. This is shocking news. Kelley, thank you for keeping us updated.
I did have the pleasure of meeting Jeff and Andrea at a couple of FlightFests, and they are a terrific couple. Jeff always seemed so healthy and vibrant; this comes out of nowhere. Please get better, Jeff. Come back and make us laugh again. We are all pulling for you.

Had a quick update from Andrea last nite:
We had a little glimmer of good news today and will keep hoping for the best. Taking things day by day... hour by hour...
Will post more updates as I get them. Andrea is quite busy with Jeff and the kids but she updates as she has time.
Hugs and prayers to the entire family. Jeff's a strong person - I'm sure he is fighting this with all he has. I've known Jeff for years through the flying board and he is always quick to help anyone out. He's had us laughing in flying chat more times than I can count. Keep fighting, Jeff!
I met Jeff and Andrea in California, they are a fantastic and sweet couple. I have pictures but I forgot how to post..
Keep fighting Jeff !!!! I'm planning a trip to California in september so get ready for a mini flight fest, I want to see you there :grouphug:
Hugs to you, Andrea and the family.

The latest update came from Andrea's sister:
This is Becki, Andrea's sister and I am asking all of Andi and Jeff's friends and family to please keep Jeff in your thoughts and prayers. He has hit another rough spot in his battle and things are not looking very good. It may be a long night for them both. So please, please pray for them. He is having alot of pain and discomfort and his O2 sats are down to 92%. They put him on oxygen. Thanks!

I have moved this thread to the main discussion forum... that is where I want it.

Any news today?
A bit of history to all... I was fighting my Fear of Flying (the hard days) at about the same time as Jeff. Jeff, Andrea, and their kids and I became good friends.
They lived not too far from me, so we would meet at Ontario and fly to Flightfests together. Poor Andrea, having TWO FEARFUL FLYERS on her hands at the same time! lol
One flight I remember in particular, we were coming back from Phoenix. The Flight Attendant let me hand out Peanuts to get my mind off my fear. So I put on the Flight Attendant apron, and started down the aisle! The passengers were great. We all, Jeff, Andrea, myself, and the other passengers had a party on that plane! It was Super Bowl Sunday, and the Captain was breaking in on the PA with game updates!
I never, even in the midst of his fear, saw Jeff down, Negative, or even in a bad mood. Both he and Andrea are just positive people, ready for any challenge, and ready to have a good time!
My heart is with them all right now.

Update from Becki - Andrea's sister:
Things have not changed much as of last night. He is in a lot of pain and they are really trying to keep him comfortable. Andi has been by his side since day 1. She is staying very strong for her family. Bren and Bekah had a rough day yesterday but it was so sweet to see Jeff, who doesnt say much, tell them each how much he loved them. Lots of tears shed but so much love. Thanks for all the well wishes!

I am so sorry to hear this! It really puts in perspective that we should not let our fears hold us back. We need to do everything we want while we are on this earth, in reality a plane crash is a much smaller possibility than all the other things that can happen out there to us. Andrea, I'm so very very sorry. The last two weeks must have been very exhausting for all of you. We all were hoping for a better outcome.

He was very fortunate to have had such a loving wife and family who did everything possible to ease his transition. May he rest in peace. May his postings archived here and at GOTP continue to offer comfort to others who are struggling to overcome their fear of flying. :)
I was watching this YouTube video this morning, and it made me think of Jeff, who lived in San Diego and Ramona at one time. His spirit is soaring free now. The video was produced by a woman pilot I know from the local 99's, she posted it a few days ago. Be sure to have your sound turned on.

I was hoping for a miracle, but it was not meant to be. I found a poem that I wanted to post in honor of Jeff...a most "fearless" flyer.
We toast our hearty comrades who have fallen from the skies,
and were gently caught by
God’s own hand to be with him on High.
To dwell among the soaring clouds
they’ve known so well before.
From victory roll to tail chase, at Heaven’s very door.
As we fly among them there, we’re sure to head their plea.
To take care my friend, watch your six,
and do one more roll for me.

Wow. I have to say that I did not know Jeff and have not been on this forum long enough to know much about him. However, I have read through all the posts here, and I just want to say how sorry I am to hear about his death. He sounds like he was a great guy, and judging from the pictures posted here, he looked like such a fun person, and so happy together with his wife. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family. I can't imagine their pain. It is so sad to see a man in his prime like that, be suddenly taken. As CAFlyer said, this should remind us to take advantage of every day we have, and to stop living in fear. You just never know what will happen tomorrow, and then it will be too late.
Sending my prayers for the family.

It seems to me that almost every post of Jeff's mentioned you and the kids. In addition to sharing his FOF he shared his family with all of us. I enjoyed hearing about all of you. I was always so impressed with how comfortable he was in his affection for you and the kids.
As Mark and others mentioned there is a whole community of folks thinking of you. Please let us know if there is anything you need. Monica

I rarely make it to the boards but when I signed in to post this thread I had 1 PM in my box from Jeff.
In that message he told me that he and Andrea just celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary in January.
Andrea, you both were lucky to have found each other. Your love for each other was so obvious to everyone. I am so very, very sorry for your loss.
Jeff was an amazing man and helped so many people here. I agree with Mark - I won't ever fly again without thinking of Jeff. He soars with angels now.

Barb-SAN gave me the news by email, as I have been away from the board for a few days. I was so hoping for the best, knowing that it could be bad. I am so sorry. I never met Jeff in person, but we have been buddies in chat and on the boards for many years. He was a warm, caring, and beautiful person and we have many of his words here to remember him by. My thoughts and prayers to Andrea and the kids.
It's nice to see some of our old-timers back too. I hope we you will come again and stay awhile.

Mark, I found this picture I'm sure you'll enjoy.. the 4 of us with Jeff on the boat. Andrea was taking the pic with my camera. I wish I could find the original (higher resolution) copy of this. I just changed computers and can't find anything, grrr.
You and Jeff were helping me with my 'fear of ferries' that day :)

It was windy and freezing, but that didn't bother Jeff...he was comfortable in a t-shirt. He sure loved the color red! :)

All week Jeff has been so much in my thoughts and prayers ... it seems too soon for him to go. My deepest sympathy to Andrea and all the family. Jeff has shown us over and over here that getting through hard times is better done with friends and with encouragement. His personality seemed to transcend "the internet" and he let us know him, his enthusiasms, fears, frustrations and victories. Jeff leaves a great legacy in family and friends. I will remember him always.

I second that as well - being very new here, I never met the guy but he sounds such a wonderful person to have known.
Some people leave this earth very early (I lost my 18 year old son to cancer, 14 years ago) but for the time that they are here, they make a difference to somebody's life - Jeff it would seem was one of those people, and so my heart goes out to his loved ones at this sad time who have lost such a beautiful soul.

The banner is great. It brought a smile to my face when I logged on today.
I hope Jeff knew how much he meant to all of us, and I'm so sorry I never got to meet him in person.
And I agree with Monica...one of the things I will always think of when I think of Jeff is the affection he had for his family. It's not always easy to tell what someone is like on a message board, but with Jeff, you always knew you were talking to someone whose family meant the world to him.
Edit: Just found this old post of Jeff's. I think it's sweet.
Andrea is a leader in my daughters scout troop. My girl is entering 6th grade tomorrow... The troop has lots planned for this year as they realize this may be the last year some of the girls keep an interest in it... I hope Bekah stays in forever! I love the "Me and my Guy" dances the local scout leaders hold for dads and daughters. I dont dance good, but she doesn't care

That's a typical Jeff post, Erika. :)
The first time I met Jeff in person, we were on tour and had a show at Pepperdine University with Josh Gracin. Jeff, Andrea and Bekah drove up and had dinner on campus then went to the show and meet & greet. It was a fun nite and I loved that they drove all that way! Bekah was just precious and you could tell how proud Jeff was of his "girls". He bragged on Bekah and her violin playing which of course made her blush.
During Flightfest Nashville 2006, Jeff and Andrea were the only ones who I told that I was expecting. Andrea and I were both sick as dogs but had a great time anyway. Jeff totally doted on Andrea - it was just so cute.
I was reading thru some of Jeff's old posts last nite and saw the thread about their planned May 2008 Hawaii vacation. He invited us to join them and meant it! What a great trip that would have been.
Jeff was so sincere and genuine and not afraid to open up about his anxiety and fears. We were all so lucky to have known him. Thanks, Andrea for sharing him with us.

The banner is very, very nice. I logged on this morning and teared up when I saw it. I never met Jeff, but shared a lot of discussion on the board for several years.
One morning a year or so ago, I was on the way to work and saw an SUV in front of me with a brewing company sticker on the back of it, and underneath it said "Bakersfield, CA." I PM'd Jeff from work and asked him did he recognize the place, and of course...he did! He PM'd back and told me all about the place as he had been there himself.
36 seems too young to pass away. Just feeling so sad for Andrea and the kids right now. :sigh:

Andrea called tonight, and we spoke for quite a while. She is obviously worn out and broken hearted, but still her personality beamed through, we even laughed together reminiscing. Especially the flight home from Phoenix that I discussed earlier.
She said she had been to the board, but had not had time to look at the thread, but did see the banner and thought it was "awesome". She wants to sit down and read through it tonight.
She told me what Kelley wrote earlier about the college fund for Jeff Jr. And the funeral arrangements. Jeff's cousin is going to be the Pastor officiating, who has known Jeff since birth.
Lots of family and friends surrounding her, and lots of love.
She told me that everyone at Taking Flight and GetOnThatPlane are just awesome! And you all are!

Good to get the updates. Thanks.
Erica, that post from Jeff was exactly what I was talking about. Jeff was just so unashamedly in love with his family and so comfortable in expressing it. Thinking about, worrying, enjoying and taking pleasure in his family was just a constant with him.
Andrea, it's strange because I deal with words every day. My job is to find words to help people and to help people find words to help themselves. But in the face of such a deep loss it's so difficult to find the words.
I'm so glad that you and the kids had a guy like Jeff in your life and that Jeff was lucky enough to have such a great wife and family. I hope the daily memories of a strong and loving relationship help you in the quiet hours. And I hope that the words here that are such a clear tribute to a man well liked and respected help carry you through some of those times.

This is just the kind of news that should never happen. Too young, too sad.
Andrea - - it's already been pointed out how Jeff felt about you and the kids. I've never met anyone who just so openly adored his family as he did. Proud of each and every one of you.
I have had the pleasure - a few times - of being with you both. Your love for each other was always obvious and contagious. You both had the ability to make everyone around you feel happy and optimistic. I, personally, was always very, very proud of Jeff's ability to just jump into his fear of flying and work with it.
We all feel - I'm sure - that Jeff's lifetime was cut way too short. Please, Andrea, know that we all hold a piece of Jeff close to our heart, and will cherish his memory.

I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of music Jeff liked.
A friend of mine lost his daughter not long ago(another person gone way too soon). He asked us to do something that I found moving. I thought I would do it for Jeff on the day of his funeral.
He asked people to play Beatles songs that day(she was a fan) . I found it a lovely way to honor a lovely young lady.
Thought it would be a nice way to say bye to Jeff from a distance.
Barb, hi back to you and others I haven't caught up with in a long time.

Yes, I was wondering what music he and Andrea were listening to that last day at the hospital. If anyone (Kelley?) checks in with Andrea before the funeral...perhaps we can locate a website playing that type of music...as an accompanyment to the chat. On Lucky 777 Internet Radio there are a number of different stations with various genres of music...perhaps someone else knows of other links, YouTube music videos, etc.

Bekah and I made a playlist on www.playlist.com (http://www.playlist.com) for jeff
we add songs daily to it as we hear things we love and he loved.
It has everything from Iz to Metallica to Brad Paisley to Linkin Park. Jeff and I have always been kind of eclectic in our musical tastes. Favorites: Oingo Boingo of course, Linkin Park, Trace Atkins, Brad Paisley, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Jr. .... there are so many!

Hey friends! I was surfing around today and re-found this forum and read back through all the posts. It made me cry and also so happy to see everyone's memories and pictures of Jeff. He loved these sites and talking with everyone so much. He (and I) loved our flight fests and I won't forget meeting all the wonderful people.
Our family is doing well these days. Brendon is 19 and a freshman in college. Bekah is almost sweet 16 and a sophomore in high school. And little Jeffrey Jr. is about to turn 3 on May 11. WE all miss Jeff very very much and think of him many times a day. It's hard to believe its almost been a year since we lost him. But we are survivors and enjoy living each day.
Thank you to everyone who posted and I would love to read many more posts about how everyone is doing. Maybe I can come to a fest in the future :)
Love to all, Andrea -- AndreafromCali

Glad to hear that you and family are doing well.
Yes, every time I come across a post from Jeff when looking at old threads from flight fests, etc, it gives me a little jolt to realize that he's gone (yet he has immortality through his writing and photos here at Taking Flight). :)
I hope someday we will have a flight fest again somewhere...keep checking in to see if we get one organized one day (and of course feel free to join us here in the discussions too).

hello all
i have only met a few of you
this is jeffs daughter Rebekah.
Reading this brought back many many memories of my dad.
I now know why he always talked about you guys and how much he loved this place.
If i may add another happy memory to this..
When my father was in the hospital.. a couple days before his passing, i went to visit him. He wanted to take a walk so we pushed the "nurse button" to get him unhooked from wires. We pressed it like 7 times and... no nurse... my dad finally sent me to get to the doctor with the news of "If you dont cut my freaking wires i'll find some scissors and cut it myself."
This was so much like my dad and is the last memory i remember of him as his true self.
these forums made me cry.. but only because it brought back so many happy memories.
thank you to all.
love, Bekah.
