Hi,
Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm a FF currently working with a therapist on my FOF. She highly suggests engaging in these forums for support also. Thanks for the great website! :wave

Welcome aboard! These online groups are what took me from 12 years of NOT flying at all to flying over 100,000 miles a year! Great resource for support. Ask any questions you may have.

Thanks for all the welcomes. Yes, my therapist is a great advocate for these type of support groups. I can only speak for myself that the fear of flying is not just knowing how planes fly, what training pilots, maintenance, security personnel go through, but also an my underlying (generalized) anxiety about control and trusting others. The combination of therapy and a support group has and will be necessary for me to cope with FOF. I will pass this site onto my therapist so she can have it for reference for other people. I really would like to fly back east for Thanksgiving, I'm close to buying tickets, but the procrastination is setting in and time is running out.

I wonder how many FOF'ers have generalized anxiety problems. I have been dealing with it for 10 or so years and have the anxiety under control EXCEPT when dealing with flying. It has pretty much manifested itself with laser focus:sigh on the control issues around flying.
Get those tickets and go back east for Thanksgiving!
A quote I love from Mark Twain:
"20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
Helps me out sometimes, especially since during his time, travel really wasn't that safe.

Great quote, invert! So so true.
Buy the tickets!!! The anticipatory anxiety is what is getting to you. Trust me - you can deal with the flights so much better once those tickets are purchased.

I love that quote... I want to add it somehow on the board or website!
Mom:
To me there seems to be three steps. The first it buying the tickets. The second is driving to the airport, and the third is climbing on-board the aircraft.
Each step has it's own anticipatory anxiety. But the nice thing is, once you have completed that step, it is behind you, and you can look forward to that next goal. Also with the completion of each step there is a sense of accomplishment.
Buy the tickets... go see your friends and relatives... it can be done! I promise!
And... great photo in the gallery!

Mark -- Definitely a great quote for this Board. My Mom always used to say, "I don't regret anything I did; only the things I didn't do." My motto in life, since she passed away 25 years ago at the too-young age of 63.
Anyway, MOM -- Hey, welcome!!! Lots of us are mothers here. (Watch it, guys~!!) Being a Mom is what finally got me over my fear of flying!
You're gonna love being here!

I'm a Mommy! 2 girls and 5 boys - hahahahaha. No really, I have 2 daughters and work with 5 grown men that need mothering sometimes. I really didnt want to pass on my fear to my girls so that was another reason I wanted to get over this fear and fly!
