My research supervisor says to me today : "So, I think the department will give us funding so you can go with me to NAGANO in February."

RIIIIGHT.

Actually, it won't work out for other reasons - I'm already committed to present a workshop at a conference at the same time in Florida and I can't ditch my teaching responsibilities with the med students for that long. So I'm off the hook. But I said, "Oh, maybe next year!"

Next year they're in Shanghai - I think - isn't that like a 48 hour plane ride or something??

Spiff, just means you'll have to start practicing now. Start taking shorter flights. Like from Boston to Hong Kong...
Well, at least now Florida will seem like a breeze!!!
See you in a few weeks. Monica:coffee

Oh Japan you are very lucky. Why not get a travel book for the area and plan some sights. As someone who wants to visit there try a garden and a temple.

I know that feeling. One year ago I was volunteered to go to Seoul from Houston. The first leg of that trip was a short one. Houston to Tokyo. Only 6600 miles.. Hello Mr. Xanax

Mark, I remember reading about that last year - it was right when I first came on the board - can you tell me anything more about flights over the pacific? How long was it really? Were there extra crews to take over after so many hours???

Spiff,

Both my flights to Asia have followed the outline of the land. From LAX, we went up to AK, followed the Aleutians over and down through Russia. It looks like it is a shorter distance straight from the US across the Pacific to Asia but it is not. It is actually shorter to fly up and over.

My friends flew from Minneapolis to Japan and took a more polar route which didn't involve much of the Pacific.

We definitely had two full crews. When the FAs boarded, there must have been 20 of them. I also saw when the first shift retired to the back of the plane to sit down and rest.

The flight was 14hrs, 40 minutes but I flew to So China. I don't know how many hours to shave off if you stop in Japan.

...I wish YOU could come to brunch with us the day after Thanksgiving. You couldn't, like, ask Mr. Spock to translocate you to Braintree at 11:30?

(What is the name of that thing they do, on Star Trek, when they get all staticky and then disappear....)

Hi Spiff,

When I went to Tokyo the sceduled flight time was 14 hours but actual flight time was 12:30 hours. My flight track took me northwest out of houston towards montana and then along Alaska. Then down the russian and china coast into tokyo. If you want to see it go track Continental flight 7. Right now they should be real close to leaving US territory.
