Well, I am flying tomorrow and have been doing pretty well up until now. I have convinced myself that I am going to be that 1 (you know, 1 in billion chance). I am not in panic mode, which I guess is a testament to the work I have been doing, but I am really uncomfortable with the idea of going tomorrow.
I feel like doing this right now :anon

Invert...hang in there! You'll do just fine! Let us know if you want us to track you.

A week ago, I was exactly where you are. In fact, I've been exactly where you are before every single plane trip I've taken. And many people are.
You're not alone, trust me. You'll get through it. Just be patient, and try not to let your imagination run wild.
Easier said than done, yes, but that's why we're here!

I would love it if I knew someone was tracking me. I posted the flight info on the tracking board.
I was thinking that a good way to deal with my in-flight anxiety would be to keep notes of what is going on. I figure it would allow to keep a rational, objective view of the situation. I will post something when I return in a couple of weeks.
Thanks for the encouragement...it really helps.

In-flight note-taking DEFINITELY helps. And when you're done, you have a ready-made trip report!

Invert...
How can your flight be the 1 in a billion... when it is MY flight that is 1 in a billion???
When your mind starts to wander in that direction, just bring it back to center by answering the "what ifs" with facts.
You will do just fine, and be just fine! HONEST!

Mark,
I appreciate you trying to "out irrationalize" me...but c'mon. I know way to well that I am the most important thing in this universe and that anything bad that can happen will happen to ME! ;)
Seriously, you are right. The one thing I enjoy most about talking with other FoF'ers is that you see that we all have the same suite of silly superstitions and beliefs. It really allows me to be able to laugh at my fears a little.

I'll be thinking about you when I'm panicking tomorrow, Invert. Hope you'll do better than I seem to be doing. A friend who's flying with me may soon resort to knocking me unconscious and dragging me on the plane!
You'll do fine. And next week we'll all talk about how it was fine and we built all this up to WAY more anxiety than it was worth...

" I'll be thinking about you when I'm panicking tomorrow, Invert."
And so begins the self-fulfilling prophecy.
Relax, both of you. You're both going to be fine.

There is a way to keep your plane from being that one in a billion. Panic as much as possible, sit gripping your armrests and jump at every little noise!
:cry
It's always worked for me.

Big smiles to both of you.... Hav a great trip. It will be safe! The airlines will do their part to ensure that. Making it enjoyable is up to you. :happyguy

Some free therapeutic advice here... it's time start smacking yourself around. Huey is right don't talk yourself into your anxiety ---talk yourself out of it. Don't picture you being the one in a billion. Picture yourself getting off the plane with a feeling of truimph and a big smile on your face.
By the way, when it's my turn just remind me to start smacking myself...:nag because I know this is easier said than done. But we can do it.
I think the idea of a inflight trip report is a really good idea.
Both of you, have a great flight.
I'll try and track tomorrow. If the timing doesn't work I'll send smooth flying thoughts your way. We'll be rooting for you. really.:pompoms

This reminds me of that post a few weeks ago that said the reason planes fly is because all the passengers pull up on their armrests at the same time...who posted that? Was it barb? Or did I dream it?
Does anyone know what I am talking about...:hamster
...or did I forget to take my Thorazine?

Yes, it was I who posted that little piece about the armrests and how lift is generated. I put it on the Captain Ray forum with the title "The Truth About Aerodynamics". I think it's on the Club TF forum too.
Sorry to be so late in joining this thread (server was down much of yesterday), and hope Invert29 has been doing just fine flying right-side up (but inverted is OK, too :nod )

...back on solid ground. I wanted to let everyone know that I posted a "brief" trip report on that board. Sorry if it rambles too much.
Thanks again to everyone! :dancers :hamster :hyped :woohoo
Debbie, that's funny. I never thought of my screen name in that context :D . The invert refers to the marine invertebrates that I study but it certainly has context with flying as well, especially with an aerobatics instructor. :rotflmao
