View Full Version : Flying Weds.- Getting Anxious

I have to fly from ORD to LGA on Weds. and I'm starting to get anxious. I'm going on a American Airlines S-80, which I generally don't mind, but I'm just not happy about flying in general. It's also my first flight in a year or so without my wife - not happy abou that. Plus it's supposed to be raining in NYC on Weds. Probably going to be bumpy. Always seems more dangerous to me to fly in bad weather, especially going into LGA, which is so small, with such a short runway and so much traffic. Plus, my wife is flying tomorrow, and I'm really nervous about her flight too. All in all, this is not shaping up to be a hapy holiday. No questions, I guess, just had to get that off my chest.

Howdy...

Rain will not bother the flight, in fact flights are usually smoother in rain. Lack of thermals and all.

You will be fine, as will your wife. Just hang in there!

TraderDude,

You might want to go to one of the flight tracking sites Mark has posted on the tracking forum, and track your wife's flight tomorrow. If possible, also track the same one you'll be taking Wednesday as well--you can spot-check it to be sure it's doing OK (and it will be :nod ). I think these actions may make it easier for you to board your flight with confidence, and remain confident throughout.

There are a lot of other good suggestions to be found in posts here--take music, take magazines that have lots of pictures, and take a notebook to keep a journal. That will help you maintain some detachment, and will give you some notes for a real-time trip report. Post your flight data and perhaps someone here can track you. :pompoms

TraderDude,

Know exactly how you feel, I feel it every time I fly, but here I am, still safe and sound, and having most of my bad airline experiences on the ground! Of course, next time I fly, I'll be on this site a few days beforehand telling everyone that I'm anxious and afraid we're going to crash, so you're not alone in your concern.

BUT

It'll be fine. Chicago to NY is a short and very do-able flight (usually much shorter than the air time they allot for it).

I understand your concerns about La Guardia's idiot runways that make you feel as if you're going to either land in the water or overshoot the runway on the other end and end up in the water, but I've flown into La Guardia a lot and never once did I need a wetsuit, although, I know, it always feels like you will.

Have a good flight, and I hope Wednesday isn't too insane at the airports.

Thanks everyone for your support...I'm heading to the airport soon. Weather doesn't look TOO bad, so hopefully the worst problem I'll have will be a bit of a departure delay. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

I used to always obsess over the weather when I was flying until I had to fly OVER a tropical storm and didnt feel any more bumps than usual. Wow. I couldn't believe it.

Weather is not really an issue :thundercloud - the pilots will fly around anything that they shouldnt fly thru. :)
