Ladies and gentlemen...we have had a slight change of plans in the location for the Chicagofest at the end of the month. The fest will now be located in whatever town you happen to be in that weekend.

I suppose another way to say it is that Chicagofest is cancelled, but just because we won't be getting together doesn't mean we can't take some time to better our flying selves. So go out, live it up and learn about aviation in whatever way you see fit.

 Erika.....

So maybe this will be our first "virtual" flight fest, and we can report back on how we spent our weekend...with photos related to aviation....or even a flight, SOMEWHERE....:D

Is it still the last of October? Am flying that Friday, I hope, provided "Plane Stupid" (Plane Stupid is about right) let me get through security and onto the plane.

Yep, weekend of the 26-28th. Let's see how many of us can fly SOMEWHERE, and then post photos and trip reports!!
Remember that flying frequently is one of the keys to becoming comfortable with flying. That is one of the reasons that we've had flight fests...to provide people with a fun destination they may not have visited before, and also have a chance to meet friends from the board in person.

There are lots of short flights one could take...I know SWA has many flights of around 1 hr. from San Diego, costing from about $50-$70 each way if you buy 14 days in advance. I haven't checked the other airlines...as I'm building my rapid rewards on SWA. It's certainly possible to take a short day trip somewhere, fly early, return late, have a nice dinner at the destination, do a little sight-seeing...and not spend much more than you would for a couple sessions with a therapist. :D

Not all are big bargains, but on occasion, some are huge bargains!

You know, I've never quite figured out what that's all about. I installed the Ding software about a year ago...but didn't realize that you need to click on the icon in the system tray. I get email offerings from SWA....specials of one sort or another, but I don't think they are "dings". I just checked, clicking the icon, and it says there are no messages there. I'm wondering if I haven't done something I should have with that software?

Barb, the messages expire after a certain amount of time. Usually there's a little flag on the icon if there's a new message (on a PC anyway, I have a Mac at home and it doesn't do the little flag). They come up once or twice a day, usually, but they're only good for a few hours.

You also have to make sure that you set your airports so they know which deals to send you.

Erika - how is your MacBook Pro doing? You hate going back to a PC and M$ Windows yet?

I LOVE my MacBookl (I don't have a Pro though, just a regular one). It's the best ever. I hate my PC at work, but then I always have, because it's old and crappy.

Well...I just found the flag and clicked on it and found the Ding fares. I'm embarrassed to say I've had that software for a year and never figured out why I didn't see any Ding fares.... I think it's just a bit too subtle...that flag is miniscule....

No worries. I click on mine daily even if I am not planning a trip in case I see something that I know a friend can use. Right now I have several airports listed - BWI, PHL, MCO and BNA.

Oh, and also sign up with every airline that flies out of your home airport - they all have emails that they send out with weekly fare specials. If you have the flexibility to take a last minute trip you can get some great deals.

If you turn on your sound, every time a little flag comes up, it makes a Ding noise (hence the name) that sounds like the seatbelt sign going off.

So I guess at the next proper fest, instead of a tour of a hangar or some such thing, the educational portion should be a tutorial about finding low fares and getting the gadgets on your computer to work!

I downloaded this little piece of software that alerts you whenever you've just missed a good low fare.

It's called "Dang!".

If you've had it installed a year, you could have an older version now...might want to check it out. The current version is 1.05; mine is 1.05.005. You can find yours by left clicking on the wing icon and then click "About".

One thing I recently discovered is that after you click on the icon with the gold envelope, and the envelope disappears, and you close the pop-up window, the message remains in the pop-up window until it expires. All you have to do is click on the wing icon again.

Well, I confirmed my flight and having thought I was booked on a 737 it now looks as though I'm on the little Fokker. What a pleasant (?) surprise.

 It says:

Aircraft : 100.

Which must be okay because as long as I'm not bouncing through the clouds again and being given a "cream cheese and pepper" sandwich (Interesting. Nice.) and a cup of aeroplane tea and trying not to spill it all down me.

Find out in the morning. Rah.

Well, it was. And I got a 'free' boiled sweet, miniscule cake and some water. And I also learned that as a courtesy to one's fellow passengers, one ought not to eat garlic in the three days prior to taking a flight. Although it wasn't so much the smell of garlic that was nearly making me puke so much as the background smell of dirty nappies.

Hey, I just realized I participated in this. I flew DEN-LGA-DEN on Oct. 27. Mileage run. I got enough miles to put me just over the qualifying requirement for 2008 status.

No pictures but it was a pretty charmed run. Everything was on time and I got upgraded to first class both ways.

Details ... it was a 757, same plane each way but different crews.

On DEN-LGA, they fed us a cold chicken plate with vegetable soup, watermelon, and brownie. On LGA-DEN, it was cheese ravioli with salad and cheesecake.

The layover was just an hour so there was no time to do anything New Yorky.

Oddly, I hadn't been planning to make the run that day. I had booked a DEN-ABQ-DEN run the weekend before but couldn't do it because the flight out was so delayed that I wouldn't make the return. Turned out DEN-LGA-DEN the following weekend was a lot cheaper, for three times the miles. Hm. Maybe it was some Erika Worldfest sorcery.

Editing to add: How could I forget to mention the airline? United, of course. :)

I can't see the pictures in Erika's post. Is it because I haven't grown enough spiritually yet? Are they secret scriptures? Is there a fee to see them? This is my first time in a cult and I want to do it right.

I didn't mean it, Great Enalpria! (That's the name of our deity in the cult -- it's also "airplane" spelled backwards). Please forgive me!
