this is my flight next friday. im starting to get really nervous and im not able to look forward to my holiday at the momemt. still my main fear is turbulence and weather.
Im always scared flying out of AMS as its usualy so windy. do you have a lot of experience with that?
Also, now that its hurricane season, will we have more turbulence? also im flying into houston at 5.30 afternoon so will it still be so hot that it will give us a lot of turbulence?
it seems im doing better and better each time i fly, but still get so nervous when i fly. i will look into the anxienty website.
thank you

Hi Marieke,

I hope I am not too late getting your answer to you, since it is Friday today. Well, besides the info on the other threads about turbulence and hurricanes, I can tell you that I have had a lot of experience flying in turbulence, windy conditions, and even hurricanes. I have not flown out of AMS (Netherlands, right?), though when I was in the military I flew all over Europe, so I can tell you that conditions there are overall the same as the States, I mean turbulence is turbulence and windy conditions are windy conditions. All the commercial airplanes that you fly on have met stringent conditions for being able to fly under very severe conditions, and most pilots have pretty much seen and can handle the conditions that occur in today's flying. I know that sometimes the jolts from turbulence can be a little disconcerting but in reality it has no effect on the safety of the flight whatsoever.
As far as hurricanes, for the most part the airlines will cancel their own flights if they think safety is threatened at all.

I hope this helps.:tiphat:

well i made it over and i made it back. on the way over i was scared for abour 30 mins and then 'relaxed'. on the way back i wasnt rested at all so was very nervous and getting all kinds of things in my head. it also happened that we had constant turbulence. you should have seen me! 'turbulence doent make a plane crash, turbulence doent make a plane crash, turbulence doent make a plane crash!' hahaha! with dinner i had wine and felt more relaxed, plus i hadnt had much sleep the night before so i slept a lot. i do notice im not liking the flying at night. the worst turbulence was the 40mins flight from LGW -AMS it got pretty rough to my standards as we were decending and most of the fligth we were in the clouds. it was smaller plane so i guess you dont go as high.
all in all i think im feeling better besides some nerves before the flight and the take-off (those engines scare me!). so i look forward to my next flight also because then i will have my visa and i can go marry my fiance and start my new life in TX! oh and its a one way ticket! :)
Thank for you answer and like all repsonses i will take it in and remember it on the flight. it all helps..

Wow, Marieke that is such an interesting story that you wrote about your flights. Sorry about the turbulence on the short flight but it sounds like you weathered it okay. Maybe it is good that it happened that way so you can see that the airplane flies fine in those conditions. And of course at cruise altitude the pilot can find the smoothest cruise altitude, but when you descend you of course must get down and so you accept any sort of conditions less than severe turbulence. Good luck on your new life in Texas. I am really thinking about how that will go for you. Keep writing us! :)
