Thank you for the welcome and your reference to the previous post regarding flight 587.
It seems like I store all of the information about prior plane crashes in my head and then assume all of the problems will then happen to me. Like a lot of people on this board, I am sure that my flight will be the one to crash (especially on take-off). On my last flight (before 9-11), I took Xanax for the first time, which helped immensely. I was going not going to go on the trip, and then I took the Xanax, got in the limo and then on the plane. The only problem is that I get anticipatory anxiety for weeks before a flight and obviously I can not take Xanax the whole time. I wish someone could just knock me out and put me on the flight!

Welcome, GI!
Well, I think many of us had such thoughts of flying like Mr. T from The A-Team...knocked out. Of course, that's not gonna happen. Stay of this board long enough and take advantages of its resources, you'll be prepared to experience flight for what it is...an exciting and wonderful adventure...and you'll want to be wide awake and alert!

Hi. I want to say welcome as well. Just today I noticed that any anticipatory anxiety I used to get is much better. I used to wish something would come up so that the trip would be canceled(you know illness, plagues, snowstorms,anything...). I had a brief thought like that today. And realized that I would be disappointed if the flight was canceled. Doesn't mean I won't get anxious on and off but it does mean there are many techniques that work. Besides knocking yourself out...:nag . If you need specific techniques just ask, people here have really good suggestions. GLAD YOU FOUND US. :yoohoo

Hi, GI,
I would like to add my welcome as well. :pompoms
I know what you mean about wanting to be knocked out! There was a long period in my life (quite a while back now, thankfully) when I was certain that that would be the ONLY way I would ever fly again :violin ...not that I was all that comfortable with being knocked out, either (control issue, I guess :mg ). But I can appreciate the solid certainty of that level of fear, and you'll find many here who can also. Same for the anticipatory anxiety, which is often terrible (worse than the flight), and endless.
The good news is that it is possible to become markedly more comfortable, and sometimes to beat the fear to the point of actually enjoying flying. Here you will have an opportunity for some good give-and-take; perhaps your upcoming flight will be easier than you might think. :)

Thank you all, it is great to hear from other people with the same issues. My husband has absolutely no fear of flying and can not understand my fear. It started when I was little, even though my family flew quite often on vacations. I remember my stomach clenching in knots on the way to the airport when I would see airline billboards because I knew we were close. When I was finally old enough to call the shots, I used other means of transportation, with a few flights here and there.
I have not flown since 2000, when Xanax helped me get to Vegas. Since 9-11 I can now add terrorism to my list of fears besides mechanical or pilot error. I am going to Vegas again in January and am hoping to kick this once and for all. I feel like my life is passing so quickly and I can not live it to the fullest unless I fly. Also, my oldest son is starting to wonder why he has not flown and I feel like he is missing out. I am even more terrified of having them with me when I fly. Thanks for all of the support.

I can totally relate to what you are saying about adding terrorism to an already long list of fears. I'm glad you found this board. I find it incredibly helpful. There's nothing like knowing that other people know exactly how you feel.
