How come some planes, on the tips of the wings, the flaps are straight up, and on other planes, there are no flaps?

Is this just a design? Or do those flaps on the tips of the wings serve a purpose?????

I think you're actually referring to "winglets". They're actually there to reduce drag and make the airplane's wing more efficient. As air spills off the end of the wing, little "tornadoes" of air are formed. This causes drag, which costs performance, and therefore money ;)

As to why they're differnent on different airplanes... well.. not all airplanes are created alike, and not all wings are the same shape. It's just a design thing I guess.

The ones you see on 737's are called "blended winglets" and were designed by a 3rd party company that partenered with Boeing.

Cool technology, actually.

Thank you Scott.

I see those "flaps" tilted up when planes are landing.

Was just wondering why some had them and some didn't and what the purpose was.

Thank you again, hun :D

So those things that pop up during landing are actually spoilers. They are used to "spoil" the lift on a jet liner. Jetliner wings are so effiicient and just love to fly. Those panel's are used during the descent process to help a jetliner to lose altitude. Some planes have more panels than others. for instance the Embraer has one per wing. 767's have 5 or 6. A couple used during flight and then the rest pop up to get rid of lift once the plane touches the runway.

Mark, are we talking about the same thing? I never see more than one on these planes..and they are at the very very tip of the wing, it's like the actual tip of the wing flips up. Some Jets don't have them flipped, so maybe they don't have them.

I think maybe the work "flip" is what is causing the confusion... maybe "turn" up would be a better word??

Anyway, you're right when you say that some jets don't have them, some have small ones, and some have BIG ones. But in all cases, they're stationary. And in all cases, they pretty much server the same purpose.

So, to summarize.. if winglets look different on different planes, it's because they are just designed differently. They don't move or deploy in different stages.

Check out the wing of the new 787 in this picture. On this plane, they've actually designed the same functionality in to the wingtip of the aircraft, without the need for an add-on piece. Pretty cool, huh?

That's a beautiful plane :macho:, I hope I get to ride in it someday.

Scott I have every intention of riding in it at the first opportunity!!!!

I do know that a charter company here in the UK will be flying them across the pond in 2009. I hope to find one before that.

This line " see those "flaps" tilted up when planes are landing." is what confused me. I thought I read it as you saw this as you were landing on a plane you were on and that they went up whenever you landed. My booboo

That pictures shows exactly what I'm talking about.

In route home from work, I pass JFK airport and I've noticed that some planes have that on the wing and some didn't. I was just curious as to know what the purpose of them was.

Thank you all so very much on answering this question for me.

I watch these planes land and take off (never wishing to be on one), wondering how the heck a "hunk" of metal like that can even get off the ground .

It fascinates me to watch them...and mind you, I'm very disappointed, when I drive by the airport, I see no planes taking off or landing..it's such a bummer :shakehead.

I do have to say, on my return flight from Jamaica, beginning of April, it was the best landing I've had (w/ the exception of my Disney trip a few yrs back, take off was the worst I had, landing was the best. Thank you for that ltr, I gave it to the captain and spoke with him and he was extremely tentative to my needs)..anyways..lets get back to Jamaica. I think that landing was so great was because I was on 2.0 mgs of xanax..now I know how much I need to take to calm me enough to wear I actually might enjoy flying

LOVE YOU ALL !!!! YOUR THE BEST !!!!!
