I am terrified of roller coasters.

A lot of people look at me like I'm riciculous and say "Flying in a plane is scarier than riding on a coaster. You're on a track when you're on a coaster. You're floating in the air with nothing holding you up when you're in a plane."

My first response to that is to slap them for their last sentence, but usually just shrug it off.

Roller coasters just seem really dangerous to me. I had a teacher in the 8th grade who was riding The Mugnum (http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/park/rides/coasters/magnum/index.cfm) and it got stuck at the top of the first hill. They had to climb down with the help of fire trucks. I wouldn't be able to do it. I'm terrified of something like that happening. And then I am also afraid of it malfunctioning and my restraint coming up or loose and me falling out and plummeting to my demise. I am also fearful of the coaster coming off of the tracks or the tracks breaking and the coaster crashing.

Anyone else here have a fear of roller coasters? Just wondering if maybe fear of flying could go hand in hand with other fears like these.

Any ideas on how to kick it?

As I've gotten older, I've become more fearful of rides. I used to LOVE the swing ride that has a million swings hanging on chains and goes round and round. The last time I rode it, I couldn't wait to get off.

As for rollercoasters, they've always terrified me. It's not spinning around . . . I could do that all day. It's the going down part. I hate it, and always have. Hmmm. Maybe there IS a connection between this and FOF.

I don't like roller coasters, although I wouldn't say I'm afraid, per se. I guess there's a little fear, but mostly, it's discomfort. I don't like that weightless feel, and I don't like my body being jerked and jarred, and, as any woman with anything up top will tell you, the bounce on those things is very unpleasant.

I do like spinny rides, though. I just can't ride them with my dad, lest he repeat the Great County Fair Incident of my youth, when he threw up outside of the Haunted House after a ride on the Octopus with me. In front of everyone! It was so embarrassing.

I don't really like amusement park rides, except the really tame ones at Disneyland, like "It's a Small World"... . I got sick on the tilt-a-whirl once...never again...and have only been on one roller-coaster, The Matterhorn, once when I was about 13. I remember being scared, and tricked into riding it, since part of the ride is hidden inside the mountain, and I didn't even realize it was a rollercoaster! I think I did O.K. on the Dumbo ride. As long as it doesn't combine motion in too many different directions at once...I get motion sick fairly easily...so that makes me unwilling to try new rides, especially if I notice a lot of people screaming on them.

I like them. Bekah and I get season passes to Magic Mountain every year. HOWEVER, I do have to deal with anxiety just like flying. But once we get going, I enjoy it. Just like skydiving.. you just got to ignore the fear if you want to do it. Make death your friend and it isn't as scary..
