You may have seen Chelle's "Resident Geek" and Ray's "Resident Chief Pilot"... And now I added one to my name.
If you want a title under your name... just post it here, and I will add it on. A neat little feature that I just discovered not too long ago.

Spiff, that is literally the second time I laughed unexpectedly while reading one of your replies and spit my water out on the keyboard. If I keep it up I'll have to be Resident Drooling Fool...
That was perfect.
Now, since Barb took Spin Doctor we'll have to work on one for you. I'll think about it as I wipe my keyboard clean.:scratch

I considered "Sunshine Girl" in homage to that dynamic trio, Gunther and the Sunshine Girls, but I don't actually like the sun that much, and I don't think everybody would get it.
I also considered "Muckraker," but I'm trying to better the name of journalists around here, not make it worse.
So I'd like to go with "Ink Slinger."

A question asked with all gentleness and humility:
Do titles make this board seem like an insider group impermeable to people new to the board? How do we express the natural affection for and knowledge of one another that is clearly present while remaining open to new people? I must confess as an infrequent poster (but a very frequent reader!) I feel the presence of an "inner circle" of posters which I am clearly outside of (which is as much my own fault as anyone else's). I'm not sure that this is wrong and it might be just a natural evolution but I wanted to raise the question.
Again, this comment is offered with great humility and with no hidden agenda or angst.

I forgot to add that this board has been exceptionally great at welcoming new people when they first start posting. I just was scrolling down and seeing all the welcome messages and thinking how great that was.

Becky does have a point, Mark. While I'm sure everyone who cruises in is welcome to have a title, and by the title stuff you want to include people, not exclude them, people may feel a little intimidated. It's a shame that often, the more relaxed and fun a group gets, the harder it is to join that group, but it's kind of true.
But you're fair, and I know you want this to be a friendly, welcoming place, so I trust you'll figure out a way to make it all work.

Hi Becky!
That is a great question... and I am very happy you asked it.
I am sure there are lurkers, and folks that do not post very often thinking the same thing.
Getting folks to add Avatars (Little picture under their name), giving them a nick name, etc is a way to try and get folks involved.
Although I have no problem with anyone lurking... I really want to encourage them to post. I know it can be a bit intimidating. I too have had to come-in as a newbie in other aviation groups... and it is a bit unnerving.
But this group is VERY open to new folks coming aboard. And that is not by my design... it is just the way the great folks here are.
You can join this group, request a nickname, and load up an Avatar TODAY!!! You can come to ANY chat at ANY time. You can post a question, and folks will run over each other to try and answer you.
If others reading this feel a sense of an "inner circle" PLEASE understand that is not on purpose. On boards like these it kind-of just happens. People who frequent and post to the board more often just get to know one another.
But, I can tell you this... no one would have any problem with ANYONE genuinely interested in helping or being helped for FOF joining our circle :grouphug
The door is wide open, your invitation has been sent, all you have to do is step up!
And again Becky... again... thanks for asking. It is a question that needed to be explored!
Happy Flying Yall!
Mark

Becky, it's a good point and an age old problem...
I've run a lot of groups and it's quite a trick to have the natural process of people warming up to each other happen without it becoming a clique and to have newer folks feeling excluded. I think it becomes everyone's responsibility to make sure everyone feels comfortable. New folks have to take a breath and jump in. Old folks have to be receptive. I do think though that it's important the group gets to know each other on a different level. Personally, this board helps me in two ways. One is getting the facts. The second is getting to know people on a personal level and knowing they really do care about what happens.
I also really enjoy hearing about people's lives(thankfully or I'd be a pretty crappy therapist).
This is the first and only message board I've ever been on. whoops. Not true. I was on another FOF board but a lot of the same people were there. So, I'm not sure how other boards handle this. I think if we stay aware of it we can keep a good balance going.
Just as a side note, I think the way you raised your point was a great example of how this board should operate. You brought it up in a very open, respectful way. Makes it easy to have dialogue with that attitude behind it. Monica

Absolutely for Kelley - "Pilot Stalker" I love that!
It's fun to pick titles for everyone else, really. "Ink Slinger" is a great one, too.
The fun in this is that we get to pick personalities with a little caption.
Monica, no, you cannot be the Resident Chicken. or the Resident Bitch. You're too nice for both, and with your upcoming trip, you're just not chicken enough to warrant the title. We'll work on another one for you!

Actually this has a good point to make it would highlight who are pilots so that people can at least gauge the answers they get. Not an ego thing but people on this site would at least know, for example, that a pilots advice on how to relax in the cabin during take off is less usful than a fellow sufferer.

Yeah, and I wonder if there is a way we can say where we are in this long journey of dealing with fear? Some of us are petrified to fly but do it with help, others have pretty much moved past the fear but stick around to get continued help and to help others, and there are the pilots...there are lots of different categories here. Might be good to know who's in what place.

Erika --
That's really a great idea. BUT, let's start it as a new thread, okay?!
Deb
Bronze Elephant: A reasonable idea, but it would be a shame if someone were to discount perfectly valid information or good ideas because they didn't come from a "qualified" source. Also, a lot of the folks here came from a board run by a former commercial pilot. Some of his conclusions about current flight events (as well as aircraft/engine testing) are highly suspect. Giving his opinions excessive weight based solely or in large part on title would be foolish.

Deb,
I meant noting it in our profiles or by our names when we post so we always have it in mind when reading what others post.
Erika
Edit: I see you did start another thread to talk about it. You're right; it does deserve discussion, so thanks!

I would love to see a signature line with the pilots qualifications on it. Huey, we shouldn't let one bad seed cloud our judgement on pilots. That one you spoke of was off his rocker and hopefully the exception to the rule. He was also lord and master of his board so no one else could edit or delete his posts (the ones that tried were stripped of Moderator status then banned altogether). With the "board of directors" on this site we hopefully have a check and balance system in place to police misleading and erroneous information if it is posted.
Erika and Deb -
And I am NOT a pilot STALKER. Working in the entertainment biz most of my adult life that word is nothing to joke about. We have had to deal with real stalkers many times and they aren't fun - in fact they are quite scary. I'll gladly be a Pilot Enthusiast, Admirer, Fan or Groupie but never ever a Stalker.

Kelley,
Sorry if I offended. I'm sure you know the "stalker" stuff was all in good fun, but I apologize. You're right; it's not really a word to throw around as a joke. I, too, have come across actual stalkers, and you're right, they're scary. So sorry.

Erika,
No, no, no. I'm not remotely offended. My skin isn't THAT thin. I think its funny but to me that word just has so many negative connotations in my line of work that I was just making sure I didnt end up with THAT title. LOL

If you go to your profile, there is an option to add a signature line.
I think that is a great idea. You can put a quote, or anything else you want. Ken and Chelle have added one to their profile.
