Had anyone bought the captains book and read it. I just purchased it off of amazon a few days ago and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it?

I think it's a great book, and there's information in there I haven't found elsewhere (and I have a whole bookshelf of books on FF and related topics (i.e. anxiety).
smiths7...Have you started reading it? What is YOUR opinion?

I liked the book. I have had FoF many years. Never really tried to do anything about it though, other than stay off planes, which wasn't very productive for me. So, when I first decided I had to start working on my FoF, I bought Ray's book before I ever stumbled upon this web site. I read the whole book the first evening that I had it. My eyes were bloodshot and tired, but I read it cover to cover. Ray wrote it in a way that is easy to understand, even for those of us who know little about the mechanics and/or the science of flight.
Of course, since reading it the first time, I've re-read parts of it and yes, it has explained several things to me that I had issues with. Like, when the plane is sitting on the tarmac and the lights blink...now I know that is power switching from the APU to the big engines...and the funny noise that sounds like a can-opener, well, that has something to do with the flaps on the wings...the weird sound it makes when the landing gear comes down and it sounds like wind blowing over something that is not aerodynamic...all that is OK stuff to hear. Before, I was scared of those sounds. But, after I read the book, I know what they are, and when I hear those noises now, I don't freak out. I'm like, "That's just the flaps," or "That's just the landing gear."
Ray's book helped me a lot. And in combination with this site, the both are excellent tools. :sunshine:

I enjoyed it. It provided the info I needed to understand flying. It explains things straight up in an easy to read format. This board and the book combined are a great combo for me.
I am clasustrophobic not really afraid to dropping from the ski. Does the book have any pointers for people with this issue??

This is my first time writing - I haven't been in a plane for 26 years and REALLY need to get over this fear. Could I please have the name/title of the "Captain's book." Thanks!

If you scroll down to the bottom of THIS forum page, you will see a banner ad for the book "This is Your Captain Speaking, Flight Training for Passengers"...click on that...the link to Amazon is on there too. :) I'd also recommend Stacey Chance's DVD...that is also linked at the bottom of this page.

I highly recommend Ray's book - he really has a way of writing to put your mind at ease about anything related to flying.
It's almost like he takes all those questions you have in your head that you are afraid to ask because you think they are dumb questions and answers and explains them in easy to understand terms. Knowledge is power so it really helps to know what the noises and sensations related to flying are - the more you know the less anxious you really are.
**For the record there ARE no stupid questions around here.***
Oh AND don't forget that if you have ANY questions about flying, feel free to post directly TO Captain Ray on his forum here. :ray: He's a busy guy flying around the country for Southwest but he checks in here regularly along with his fellow pilots Royd and John Robinson to answer your questions!
