View Full Version : April and May - Prime Time for Flying ?

I'm still trying to figure out supply/demand, fares, and fare sales.

We like flying SWA, but found their fares to our regular destination, PHX, for April and May are higher than normal and typically the three cheapest fares all booked up. Using the best available fares, the cost would be nearly half to double more than what we usually pay. We typically leave late Thursday and return on Sunday. I could be wrong, but it also seems SWA has eliminated some of their daily flights between TPA and PHX; if so, this might add to the higher demand and costs per available flight?

Are April and May prime months for flying? I also noticed that rental car rates were higher for these months vs. other months.

I gave up on booking SWA for April and May because of the high cost, and right now I don't have the luxury of waiting to see if any Ding fares will ever pop up for our schedule. Other things I noticed are that number of Ding fares between these two destinations is less than in the past few months and they rarely extend beyond two or three weeks. They're great if you have unlimited flexibility.

I used sidestep.com to see which airlines had the best buys...Northwest and Delta were the main two. Their current "sale" costs were close for our flying dates, but Delta had a better schedule for us. I went with Delta since we also have FF accounts with them. The bottom is that we saved nearly $600 between the two flights I booked with Delta.

I could have saved more but the fare changed while I was completing my first online booking. Grrrr! I called Delta customer service today to discuss; all the man (somewhere in the far east) could say is that fares change everyday...sorry! Looks like it's the Luck of the Draw!?

Oh, then he wanted to know if he could rent a car for me! OK, now the "sorry" is out of the way, can we take some more money out of your pocket? :shakehead

Monica, thanks for reminding me about Easter and Passover; let's also add school Spring Break to add to the travel demand.

Ken, thanks for the US English 800 number!!! I just hate it when an agent is forced to push other products or services when the issue you're calling about is resolved (or not).

Deb, thanks for your confirmation of what I found. I have and use our Dollar Express membership for PHX; they always seem among the lowest, if now the lowest. I get the same rate if I reserve through SWA or logged into Dollar Express.

Sean, I think you're right about higher prices in general; gives them a chance to make up some of the losses from when gas prices spiked last year. A Ding fare came today for just over $100 each way to Austin. Heck, that's no deal when compared to just a few months ago...got $60-$79 Ding fares all the way to Phoenix.

Looks like I'll be using sidestep.com and checking the airline sites more frequently in the future!

Don and I bought tickets as early as they became available for our trip to Las Vegas. I'm wanting to say that SWA opened up booking through March in November and we bought our tickets in mid to late November. Anyway, we got the Internet Fare rate and got 2 roundtrip tickets out of BNA for $355 bucks. Now, if you go on SWA and look, the Internet Fares are gone, the Fun Fares are gone, everything is pretty much booked up all but for the MUCHO $$$ tickets that are around $350 each. We were just really planning ahead for our spring break trip, so we got "on the ball" as early as we could to get some affordable rates. Know what you mean though about the rates fluctuating so drastically...and what is up with the DING fares lately??? They are only putting out 1 or 2 spots you can fly to and you have to go within the next couple weeks. Not so exciting now when I hear it DING on my computer.
