Ok...so Monday I am flying from SNA (Costa Mesa, CA) to Spokane...with a stop in Seattle. My boyfriend booked the flights and they are on Alaska Airlines...I have been doing a little research and now I am terrified! I have been dealing with this FoF thing very well. But this...oh my...they have had so many safety issues. Do any of you know the current situation with them? And/or do you fly them? Should I cancel?
Freaking out a bit.

Would I fly Alaska Airlines? Yes, although I have not, as I haven't gone anywhere that they fly.
Should you cancel? It's your call. Are your tickets refundable? Are there seats available on another airline? What will it cost you to buy them on short notice? What do you think the odds really are of there being a problem, given how many Alaska Airlines planes are flying every day?

I would fly them today!
Should you cancel? Not over any perceived safety issues.
I think you are referring to the investigations in regards to the Alaska crash off of the California coast. Regardless, if they are being investigated, Alaska is not going to do anything to bring more light on them. In other words... they are most likely one of the safest around right now for that very reason.

When thinking about incidents and issues, we really do have to look at the Big Picture. I am a small-picture person, and suspect that is a quality shared by many FoF-ers.
For example, we really must look at how many flights per day, over how many years, an airline has, if we're going to research the airline at all, which may in fact not be that advisable without an ironclad grip on the concepts of statistical analysis.
It's been said by others here, too, that commercial flight is so safe that when we try to figure out what airline is "safest," the degree of difference is so small as to be completely insignificant.

As Mark said because they had a high profile incident they will be being scrutinised for saftey more closely than anyone else.
If you look through most airlines history they have had an incident, but if you look at car manufacures they have had far more than airlines. If you drive anywhere your in more danger than being on an aircraft. In fact if you like on the west coast of the US your more likely to get killed sat in your house by an earth quake than sat on a plane.
I would not re-book, your perfectly safe the only thing thats going to beat you is your own mind.
I had all the same issues, I would not fly certain airlines, aircraft and even from certain airports. I am pleased to say I have flown lots of different carriers now, all the airposts I was afraid off and even some very interesting aircraft. I was terrified of 747's and now it's my favourite plane.

Kelly,
I have flown on Alaska since their incident and wouldn't hesitate to do so again. They are just as safe as any other US based commercial airline out there.
You'll be fine. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number then you can earn miles on the flight!
