Hi, I'm about to fly with Finnair and their MD-11 from Stockholm to Bangkok. But now people have told me that the MD-11 is old and unsafe, and as I am afraid of flying this has totally freaked me out!

Why is th Md-11 unsafe and how unsafe is it?

I'm sure Royd will pop oin with some thoughts, but I would caution you against using terms like "unsafe" or "old". While it may be true that the MD-11 has a higher accident rate than some other aircraft, sweating the difference is really not something I would recommend. It's sorta like discussing how much less likely you are to win the Powerball lottery than the regular lottery. Neither one is very likely to happen.

There are a ton of MD-11's out there flying (in the US they are used heavily as freigters) and they are hardly dropping out of the sky.

I would not hesitate to get on one tomorrow!

The MD11 is an upgrade of the DC10. The DC10 in its day was revolutionary and I have yet to speak to any pilot who flies one to speak badly of if. Older aircraft do have more incidents because they have been around longer. Aircraft that have been around longer have had more of the quinks worked out and are a very known quantity. Relax, enjoy aviation as it used to be with large seats and a spacious cabin before the accountants shrunk the seats and added an extra 70.
