View Full Version : Turbulence prediction ?

Hi,
I do have a fear of flying, it centres around my dislike/fear of turbulence. Is there a website which predicts the amount of turbulence a plane will experience on a particular flight. I imagine that pilots must have access to this information in some form? I am thinking that if I could know what to expect on the flight it would not be as disturbing.
If anyone knows where to go on the net I would appreciate that info.
PG.

Welcome, Perthguy! Are you looking for information for Australia or the U.S.? There is a lot of U.S. information available here: http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/, but I have no idea for Australia. Perhaps you would find something with a Google search. I think many people here will also tell you not to bother looking it up, as the airlines have access to much better information, and do everything they can to avoid turbulence, changing routes and altitudes if necessary. I have issues with turbulence too...but am trying to work on improving my relaxation techniques so that when the plane encounters it, I can handle it.

Here in the US, pilots have sources like this:
http://adds.aviationweather.gov/airmets/
and there is undoubtedly something comparable for Australia. However, some types of turbulence are more predictable and some not so.

Hello Perth!
Welcome Aboard Taking Flight!!!
Turbulence is kind-of hard to predict. I guess there are times of the day where it is more prevalent, and certain weather conditions can be associated with turbulence. But sometimes it just happens.
How about not worrying about it whether it happens or not???? :)
I know... easier said than done. But think about it... we know that turbulence is not a problem for the aircraft or the pilots. It is a problem for someone up walking around. But other than that, it is a comfort issue. No, it is not fun to experience, but if you can relax "with it" and just ride along... you may find it is not that bad.

Here's the link for an overview of the chance for clear air turbulence over the Pacific, including Australia... http://www.turbulenceforecast.com/pacific.php
And...a reminder that the airlines and pilots have access to this information, and more, so they know what areas to avoid when planning their routes.
