Hi All - flying this evening from NYC to Tampa and the weather is bad. Raining, cloudy, etc. I know in the South (near ATL) its HORRIBLE! Please send me some words of advice. I realize they wouldn't fly if it wasn't safe but I'm still freaking out!! ALOT!
Thanks!

Hey Jana!
Long time no see!
Remember most of the weather is close to the GROUND so really the only time you will be in the rain is during takeoff and landing. Clouds and weather systems do stir up the air a bit so sometimes when you are flying thru cloudy areas you get some good bumps but it is all very normal and safe for the plane - just really unsettling for the passengers.
I have a special playlist on my Ipod just for Turbulence - all upbeat music. The more the bumps the louder I crank the tunes and just try to bounce along with the music. I also find it easier to relax and sink into the seat rather then to sit rigid and grip the armrests (trust me on this one).
The pilots won't fly if the weather is bad. The airports will close if the weather is bad.
I wish I was headed to sunny Florida today - I have to wait 12 days!
Have a good trip!

Thank you!!! I know - I've been so good lately with my flying. Now I'm pregnant and freaking out again! :) Gotta love the hormones. I keep telling myself ... they won't fly if it isn't safe!!!! I suppose they keep special attention on days like today since the weather is so gross!! Have fun in Florida. We are living there now and I must say ... its wonderful!
Thanks Kelley!!

Rain is no big deal for an airliner.
Clouds are no big deal for an airliner.
Remember, they're flying on instruments regardless of the weather. Sunny? Cloudy? Rainy? Doesn't matter. They're on instruments anyway. Visibility in the air is a non-issue.
Bad storms are to an airliner what big piles of glass and tacks are to your car. Only a problem if you drive through them. Which is why you don't drive through them!
Your pilots will know exactly what's going on with the weather and where it all is. So will his "pit crew" down on the ground.
