Out of 9 airlines, including the majors, they have the only non-stop flights to a destination we are considering. The plane would be an Airbus 320. I'm familiar with the plane, but not the airlines.
Thanks in advance,

My friend's Dad is a baggage handler for them and flies them all the time with no worries. :)

I flew America West from Columbus to New York several years ago. The airline is safe, but as far as service I would advise you to go with another airline. Their service was terrible!

Safety wise?
Fine airline. Many friends over there. Some pains due to the low-profit margins afforded by todays ticket prices.
Travelers take note!
Once the airline "overcapacity" issue gets resolved here in the states, ticket prices will likely rise about 25-30%. Prices now are where they were in 1988! Enjoy it while it lasts!

I have to agree...
Safe - Yes
Good aircraft - Yes
Good service - Not the times I have been on them, and will never fly them again!

I saw on Orbitz that they have a problem being on time.
What terrible service did you have for you not to fly with them again???

The good thing about flying America West is that you are likely to come home with a good story to entertain friends. I can't remember who posted the last AWA trip report we had here, but it was a hoot (although not for her at the time).
A couple of years ago, my boss and her assistant flew to Phoenix from Philadelphia. My boss flew US Airways, and her assistant flew America West. Boss's round-trip flights were uneventful. Assistant's return flight was the stuff of legend ... let me see if I can remember the highlights:
There was some kind of problem in Phoenix, and his nonstop Phoenix-Philly flight was cancelled. Instead, he had to to fly WEST to Las Vegas and connect with a midnight flight to Philadelphia. Exhausted, he boarded the midnight flight in Las Vegas.
Did they give him any special consideration to make up for the inconvenience (like many other airlines seem to try to do)? Not at all. To his horror, he saw that he had been given a middle seat in the last row between the biggest people on the planet. I think they weren't even able to put the armrests down. He was squooshed, truly squooshed, unable to move for the five or six hours it took to get to Philly. He still gets a weird look in his eye when he describes the trip, as if it were a surreal voyage into the Twilight Zone. He will never fly America West again.
I know it's only anecdotal, but after a while all the anecdotes add up.
But yeah, they are safe. :)
