Taking Flight Nashville Flightfest
October 20, 21, 22 2006
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/mark9091/Admin/nashbanner2.jpg
Come to Nashville Tennessee for some warm charm, and southern hospitality as we celebrate Nashfest 2006.
Dinner for the fest will be Saturday Night aboard the General Jackson Showboat (http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylordopryland/gjack/index.cfm). We will cruise the Cumberland River as we enjoy a southern dinner, fantastic entertainment, and spectacular company!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v132/mark9091/Admin/showboatgen.jpg
The General Jackson Showboat is a 300-foot-long vessel styled in the grand tradition of the paddlewheel riverboats that cruised the great Southern waterways in the 1800s.
We need to make reservations soon for the General Jackson, so get your name in!
For those staying on Sunday, we will enjoy lunch at Historic Monell's. (http://monellsdining.citysearch.com/page/o2x5/Home_Page/Home_Page.html)
At Monell's, the table service is communal. All items are passed around the table and the excellent staff at Monell's soon replenishes an empty bowl. Each day's menu includes 2-3 meats, 3-4 salads, 4-5 hot vegetables, drink and dessert.
We are looking to plan more events for Saturday, and as confirmed, I will add them here on this thread. I will also research local hotel information, and add that here as well. For now, mark your calendars, and get your name in!
See y'all here!

I'm in as far as I know - I'll just make that my week in the Nashville office.
Mark - I stay a week a month in a Nashville hotel so I am sure I can help anyone out looking for rooms too if needed. :)
I would AVOID Union Station at all costs. It is absolutely gorgeous in the lobby but the rooms are old and musty smelling. The hotel is an an old train station and guess what is next to train stations - TRAIN TRACKS with trains going by just under your room blowing their horns at 3am. Trust me on this one - I know this from experience.

I am due for a new nephew earlier that week. I'll have to see how things are going as the date gets closer.
Heck, bring him along! Newborns fit great in the overheads.
I'll be there (of course)! This should shape up to be a great Fest. The weather that time of year will be perfect for a cruise along the Cumberland river. And Monell's... well, I'm getting full just thinking about that place.
We'll have to see how things go as the day draws closer, but I'm going to see if I can't arrange a tour of the tower at BNA.
And would anyone be interested in some Cessna rides? :tiphat:
Should be fun! So keep your eyeballs peeled for good fares to BNA, folks, and c'mon down! (Or up. Or over.)

ok, don is checking to see if that is the week we are due to head to los angeles but if it's not...count us in! we would most likely just come down and do some activities with you guys on saturday and then maybe do dinner and spend the night somewhere.
how cool! hmm...we don't get to fly there though...well...drat! but, on an upnote...i can drive my mercedes that don bought me for getting tenured in my job.
i'm with kelley on union station...the first time i ever stayed there was the last time. *LOL* the train kept me up all night and the upstairs rooms and hallways are really rather creepy! i kept feeling the need to look over my shoulder when i went out for ice that night. it was a little too eerie for my tastes!

and SWA does fly non-stop SAN-BNA ..... in slightly under 4 hrs.....

I think he was making fun of SWA at how they hop across the country!
But they ain't doing it that much anymore!
Or maybe a 72 hour Cesnna ride! :D
If you have a direct here, you will most likely have a direct back.

Imagine logging all those cross-country hours in one fell swoop.....:D
There are quite a few options for daily SWA flights SAN-BNA...some non-stop, some with one stop. NWA also flies there via Detroit, Minneapolis, or Cincinnati....though it takes a good bit longer and involves changing planes...not necessarily a bad thing since the idea is to get practice in commercial flying.;)

No I was koking about the East-West Winds. Was only kidding. It doe not take that long, but the winds can make one leg (usually the westbound one) a good hour longer than the other.
That's all... no biggie. SWA is offering plenty of non-stops these days.

The NWA thru Cincinatti (CVG) would be on a Delta codeshare. The only NWA flights out of BNA are thru MEM, DTW or MSP.
AA has a direct from BNA to LAX but not sure about SAN.
Looks like SWA is your best bet, Barb. Book that ticket!

True enough...I've noticed that on the SAN-DTW vs. DTW-SAN flights.
I suppose the time difference would be more noticeable in light aircraft...hmm how many hours WOULD it take in a Cessna?....and how much would you have to allow for a prevailing headwind (which would be much less than the jet stream?). Don't get me started.....!!

Thanks, Kelley. The flight via Cincinnati came up when I searched the NWA website for SAN-BNA, but it clearly states that it will be on Delta. So guess you get miles on NWA World Perks anyway? I do have a credit for $56 on NWA that I need to use...but not sure it's worth an extra two hours in the air, a guaranteed seat, but the chance of losing luggage in a plane change. We'll see....I'm in a "sleep on it and think about it for awhile mode" right now, but it does sound like a lot of fun. I've never been to Nashville, and it would be fun to meet you'all in person.
Does anybody have a GOOD hotel recommendation, now that we know to stay away from the train station!?

...hmm how many hours WOULD it take in a Cessna?
Good question! It depends on the kind of Cessna you're talking about, of course. One of these (http://citation.cessna.com/) would get there in a jiffy!
But, assuming the worst-case-scenario (a 152 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_152)), and assuming a conservative 90 knots average speed, with a 250 nautical-mile range between stops, your route might look like this (http://www.jeffjetton.com/airplotter/index.php?codes=JWN%0D%0ACVK%0D%0AH92%0D%0AE42+RON %0D%0ASAF%0D%0ATYL+RON%0D%0AYUM%0D%0ASAN%0D%0A&title=Nashville+to+San+Diego&connect=on).
You would log about 17 hours of flying time, and it would cost about $450 in fuel. Probably take at least three days--two if you pushed it.
(And realistically, you probably couldn't fly that route in a 152 because of the mountains. You'll likely have to veer south, around El Paso, where the elevations aren't as bad.)
Given the money and the time, I would totally do this trip! :D
- Jeff
P.S. If you think a 152 has no business doing a cross-country trip of that nature... well, you're probably right. But that doesn't stop people from doing them anyway (http://www.cessna150-152.com/ultimatexcountry1.htm).

There's swank (http://www.nashvillehilton.com/), and there's super-swank (http://www.thehermitagehotel.com/site/), and there's "holy moly this hotel is huuuuuge (http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylordopryland/tour/gallery.cfm)", and then there are places even I wouldn't stay at (http://www.roadtripmemories.com/images/rtm/20050702_Nashville/20050703_Drake_Motel_01.JPG).
Sprinkled throughout are any number of good, standard-issue hotels, like your Hampton Inns and the like. Plus bed & breakfasts, if that's your bag.
I'm sure Mark is putting together a list of fine hospitality establishments as we speak! (Right, Mark? :))

"Given time and money"....yes...that's always the question, isn't it? And
fuel is only part of the cost...you also have to rent the plane...and get it back to Nashville, plus food and lodging....but, one can always dream on....you never know....I never expected to set foot in a Cessna two years ago.

Hotels...SWANK...I guess so! For all the music industry stars? I usually go a step or two above Motel 6...decent, clean, quiet, no bugs, comfy bed, good area....beyond that, would rather spend the money on other things. Will see when Mark gets his list together...some are probably more convenient to the airport and activities than others.

Ugh, yeah. Actually, most rental fees include fuel, of course. But even though the 152 is the cheapest plane at the place where I rent, it's still $74 an hour. So it would easily be $2500, round-trip.

Now, WHY did you have to go and link THAT site?????
I didn't even know there were companies doing that!
I've traveled most of those western state routes by car....it's gorgeous country!
I guess part of the difference in price is the air tour company provides a GUIDE and an itinerary....and a plane if you need it...maybe mechanical "fix-it or replace it" support if something happens to one of their planes?

Maybe we should look at hotels around the area of the General Jackson??
That huuuuuuge hotel (http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylordopryland/) is in the area of the General Jackson.
In fact, it pretty much is the area! :jawdrop:
Here's a Google Maps image (http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=36.202272,-86.695567&spn=0.001515,0.002516&t=k&om=1) of the boat. If you zoom out, you'll see the enormous Opry Mills (http://www.oprymills.com) mall next to it. Just north of that is the Gayord-Opryland hotel (with the multiple glass atria visible).
And north of that, you'll find oodles of not-quite-as-expensive hotels (http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?name=&addr=&state=TN&csz=Nashville%2C+TN&ds=n&uzip=37219&mag=1&desc=&country=US&dma=659&cat=trav&resize=l&trf=0&lat=36.16534&lon=-86.784317&mlt=36.205858918918&mln=-86.696531790959&rezoom=1&.intl=us&addrtype=12&compass=&BFKey=ho#mapcontent).
Of course, there's also downtown (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/maps/extmap;_ylt=Av2mWH_LVGfBm3L6p5JZeYhkDLMF/*-http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?name=&ed=tZPGYep_0TrTZ_0m9wtrhRzYCgxdEB1sqISmpdIUSIXSbHE qfq6Cj1rp0Id26RPm1ZwuCzz1cLR3eW0XQ9zP8IyxbVpvN8uAF 30DfEOH&csz=Nashville%2C+TN&desc=&mag=2&ds=n&state=TN&uzip=37219&country=US&BFKey=ho&cat=trav&resize=l&trf=0). Lots of stuff to do within walking distance around there.

Also keep an eye on the American Airlines site. They have an LAX-BNA direct once a day that I have booked for less than $200 RT before. They may have an email alert for cheap fares as well so sign up for that if they have one.
Hope my favorite redheaded navigator can make it!

Well why didn't you say so? If it's "omens" you're looking for, then I bet you'll find them. As we're discussing elsewhere, you can get fate to send you any signs you want if you put your mind to it!
For example, what did you do this morning? Proably got up and had some coffee, right? Well did you know that Tennessee has a Coffee county? It's not too far from Nashville. It's a sign! :coffee:
Then, did you get in your car and go to work? You probably heard some music on the radio, didn't you? Well Nashville's nickname is "Music City". It's another sign! :happyguy:
Later this evening, I bet you'll go to bed for a good night's rest, won't you? Well, "night rest" rhymes with "Flight Fest"! Could it be any more obvious? :airplane:

   Jeff..... That's a good start on the "positive omens". Yes, I've been following the omen discussion on the other threads. I'd like to think I live my life in a rational manner, but then I look back on some of the most significant decisions I've made....life-changing directions, really. They were often made on "intuition" and "gut-feeling" .... because there really was no way to predict the outcome. In retrospect I'm happy with the decisions....but am not really sure how different the decision-making process was from "looking at omens". Let's face it, people (including heads of state, even recently) have been consulting oracles, fortunetellers, tea leaves, and astrologers for centuries, trying to decide what to do, and when to do it.

A little history about your ring leader...
And Jeff started this...
There really is a Coffee County Tennessee.
There are two "sizeable" cities in that county...
Tullahoma and Manchester
Each year there is a football game played between Tullahoma and Manchester to see who takes home the "Coffee Pot" trophy.
And yes... I played for the infamous "Coffee Pot"!
The Coffee Pot Trophy has been around since the mid 60s, and I am happy to see that the same trophy that I fought over is still being battled over!!
For 2005... Tullahoma kept the pot!

hey guys!
as of now, the CEO says we have no for-sure plans on los angeles in october, so it appears don and i are free in october for nashfest!
we are probably going to try and go for staying at the hilton downtown. i LOVE their pillow-top mattresses! and it's a good view of downtown and walking distance to broad and all the legendary music clubs, etc.
can't wait to meet all of you!!! :D

Oh Courtney you are SOOO right about the Hilton on 4th and their pillow-tops. Those are THE most luxurious beds from any of the hotel chains. I used to stay there for a week every month until the construction noise from the Symphony hall started being such a nuisance. It isn't pleasant being woken up at 7am by jackhammers and big cranes when you just rolled in at 4am.
Yay! Oooh, this is really getting tempting now. How do I get to Nashville? I can get to Atlanta. I can get to New York. I can get to Chicago. Will that do?
October does clash with me and Agne's (Agne's and me's? Agne's and mine?) Eurofest though ....

Kari,
If you can get to Atlanta then it is only another 37 minute flight to Nashville! From Chicago or NYC it is about a 90 minute flight.

Or an under-four-hour drive in a rental car! (Not that I'm suggesting you at all avoid flying--not on this site! But it might(?) be a bit cheaper, you'll see some of the South, and you'll have a car to go exploring with when you get here.)

I wouldn't recommend the drive from Atlanta to Nashville to someone from out of the country. Monteagle is quite intimidating!

Yes.. we can do Eurofest and Nashfest together. And talk on the phone? On the internet? I wish we had teleportation.
Would anyone be interested in an Eurofest? (we thought in London but suggestions are welcome)
Jeff if I fly into Atlanta will you fly over and pick me up? You could bully all those big planes out of the sky! 37 minute flight - but who with? I can't find anyone :(
I've already seen Atlanta and Nashville and everything between. Haven't been back to the US since  I don't think anyone would let me hire a car and to be honest the thought of driving in America scares me to death: they'd probably give me this massive automatic jeep thing, you all drive on the wrong side, go through red lights (or is that Canada?), overtake up the inside and only go at two speeds: 45 or stopped :) And a real life American told me that their driving test consists solely of drive along without knocking any cones over followed by "merging with imaginary traffic."
Failing all this we can of course have globalfest with me and Agne and whoever else in London linked by satellite to Nashville :)

It says on the website that it's one hour and one minute. The good news is that prices are coming down. The bad news is that if I go this could be the most expensive couple of days of my life. Change from 450 now I think - woohoo! And their meals are so massive that I would probably only need to get one the whole time I was there. Is America one of those countries where it's polite not to finish your dinner?
The secret is to think of the most bizarre route possible and try that as it's probably about half the price. So far I have Manchester-Dublin (5 hour wait or something)-Chicago O'Hare-somewhere to crash-Chicago Midway-Nashville. And back again. Southwest crack me up, why would I pay $150 when I can pay $70? So anyway I'd get there and be too tired to actually do anything.

Actually the 1 hour and 1 minute is the time from when the plane pushes back from the gate until it rolls up to the gate in Nashville so it counts all the time for pushback, taxi out to the runway, waiting in the sometimes LOOOOONG line to takeoff, 37 minutes wheels up to wheels down in Nashville unless you are routed around weather or ATC issues, taxiing in from the runway (some in Nashville are across the street from the airport so you have to taxi over the bridge), pulling up at the gate, ground ops people pulling the jetway over so you can deplane.
Trust me. 37 minutes of off the ground time.
That's not long enough :)
Okay 417 squid gets me from Gatwick to Nashville via Dallas (a new state), a ride on the 777 :D:D:D:D:D:D and a dodgy motel (but at least it has a photocopier!) for the time I'm there. Am tempted just for the 777, but I'm a bit sad like that :)

Squid, yeah. The predictive text on my phone won't accept quid as a word so rather than mess about I use the twee variation.
You need a photocopier at the hotel because .... well I don't know why but it's the only facility they have so might as well relish in it :)
Unfortunately the business has quite enough expense at the moment. But hang on - when is the Atlanta book fair? That's about then :D

NUMBERS UPDATED 08/25/06
We are three months from the Nashville Flightfest and working hard to put on a good event.
Presently we are working with Southwest Airlines to tour the operations, and some behind the scene activities, including, hopefully a up close and personal tour of a 737!
This will be on Saturday Morning.
On the same day we are also hoping to obtain tours of other airport locations.
The riverboat cruise and dinner is on schedule, as is brunch at Monell's on Sunday Morning.
As developments occur, I will keep you posted.
In the near future, I am going to have to provide some hard numbers to the individuals arranging the tours, etc. So start making your plans to attend!
So far we have 16 confirmed attending (including guests and members). 22 including the "Strong Maybes"

Mark, This is shaping up to sound like a VERY interesting Flightfest weekend. It would be fascinating to have a behind-the-scenes tour...not something we would likely be able to arrange on our own. I know how frustrating it is to plan an event for people with, ehem, commitment issues (or to BE one of those people  )...so for the sake of your event planning, you can move me into the "confirmed" column. :)
I will figure out my flight & hotel details later...by the end of August, I think . I'm still waiting for signs, omens, and intuition to become clear, as far as which days to travel, how many days to stay in Nashville, whether or not to visit other friends in the area, make it part of a larger trip, etc. And there was some mention that maybe someone would like to donate $3,000 or so for a cross-country Cessna flight...but so far no one has stepped up to the plate on that idea. And...there was a question as to whether or not RAY would be flying that route any time around festival weekend...since there is a non-stop SWA flight from San Diego. Anyway, it's on my calendar, and there's $ set aside....so count me in (for now!)
I hope one of you Nashville locals can give some specific recommendations about hotels...which would be most convenient to all the planned activities, in the $75-$100/night range.

Barb-SAN: Check out the Fairfield Inn by Opryland which is near the General Jackson. That is where I always stay when I have to be in that part of town.
Otherwise I always stay in Brentwood at either the Homewood Suites, Hilton Suites, Candlewood Suites (all of these have kitchens) or at the Courtyard or Residence Inn.
There are some nice Marriott properties by the airport which are just a few minutes down Briley Parkway from the Opryland area - Fairfield Inn and Springhill Suites are my 2 favorites.
Most of the hotels offer AAA and government rates (if you qualify).
Let me know if you need any help!

I have been to Charleston... Don't let Kelley fool you! There is some SERIOUS Civil War history there!
As for terms... I suggest all TF Members applying for Visas to enter the South learn these terms. You not stand out quite so much if you do.
I especially suggest the first to Monica. She should start using this term as soon as possilble!
Addled: Confused, disoriented, as in the case of Northern sociologists / psycaitrist who try to make sense out of the South, "What's wrong with that Yankee? He acts right addled."
Afar: In a state of combustion. "Call the far department. That house is afar."
Ahr: What we breathe, also a unit of time made up of 60 minutes. "They should've been here about an ahr ago."
Ar: Possessive pronoun. "That's AR dawg, not yours."
Ary: Not any. "He hadn't got ary cent."
Awfullest: The worst. "That's the awfullest lie you evr told me in your life."
Bad-mouth: To disparage or derogate. "All these candidates have bad-mouthed each other so much I've about decided not to vote for any of 'em."
Baws: Your employer. "The baws may not always be right, but he's always the baws."
Best: Another baffling Southernism that is usually couched in the negative. "You best not speak to Bob about his car. He just had to spend $300 on it."
Braht: Dazzing. "Venus is a braht planet."
Bud: Small feathered crature that flies. "A robin sure is a pretty bud."
Cawse: Cause, usually preceded in the South by the adjective "lawst" (lost). "The War Between the States was a lawst cawse."
Cayut: A furry animal much beloved by little girls but detested by adults when it engages in mating rituals in the middle of the night. "Be sure to put the cayut out-side before you go to bed."
Chunk: To throw. "Chunk it there, Leroy. Ole Leroy sure can chunk 'at ball, can't he? Best pitcher we ever had."
Clone: A type of scent women put on themselves. "what's that clone you got on, honey?"
Contrary: Obstinate, perverse. "Jim's a fine boy, but she won't have nothin' to do with him. She's just contrary, is all Ah can figure."
Daints: A more or less formal event in which members of the opposite sex hold each other and move rhythmically to the sound of music. "You wanna go to the daints with me Saturday night, Bobbie Sue?"
Danjuh: Imminent peril. What John Paul Jones meant when he said, "Give me a fast ship, for I intend to put her in harm's way."
Deah: A term of endearment, except in the sense Rhett Butler used it when he said to Scarlett O'Hara, "Frankly, my deah, Ah don't give a ****."
Didn't go to: Did not intend to. "Don't whip Billy for knockin' his little sister down. He didn't go to do it."
Dollin: Another term of endearment. (darling) "Dollin, will you marry me?"
Dreckly: Soon. "He'll be along dreckly."
Effuts: Exertions. "Lee made great effuts to defeat Grant."
Everthang: All-encompassing. "everthang's all messed up."
Everhoo: Another baffling Southernism - a reverse contraction of whoever."Everhoo one of you kids wants to go to the movie better clean up their room."
Fahn: Excellent. "That sure is a fahn-lookin' woman."
Farn: Anything that is not domestic. "Ah don't drink no farn liquor, specially Rooshin vodka."
Fetchin': Attractive. "That's a mighty fetchin' woman. Think I'll ask her to daints."
Fixin' to: About to. "I'm fixin' to go to the store."
Foolin' around: Can mean not doing anything in particular or sex, usually of the extramarital variety. "Sue caught her husband foolin' around, so she divorced him."
Fummeer: A place other than one's present location. "Where do we go fummeer?"
Gawn: Departed. "Bo's not here. He's gawn out with somebody else."

Hot: A muscle that pumps blood through the body, but also regarded as the center of emotion. "That gull (girl) has just broke his hot."
Hush yo' mouth: An expression of pleased embarrassment, as when a Southern female is paid an extravagant compliment. "Honey, you're 'bout the sweetest, best-lookin' woman in Tennessee. Now hush yo' mouth, Jim Bob."
Ignert: Ignorant. "Ah've figgered out what's wrong with Congress. Most of 'em are just plain ignert."
Ill: Angry, testy. "What's wrong with Molly today? She's ill as a hornet."

Ka-yun: A sealed cylinder containing food. "If that woman didn't have a kay-un opener, her family would starve to death."
Kerosene cat in hell with gasoline drawers on: A colorful Southern expression used as as evaluation of someone's ability to accomplish something. "He ain't got no more chance than a kerosene cat in hell with gasoline drawers on."

Lar: One who tells untruths. "Not all fishermen are lars. It's just that a lot of lars fish."
Layin' up: Resting or meditating. Or as Southern women usually put it, loafing. "Cecil didn't go to work today 'cause of a chronic case of laziness. He's been layin' up in the house all day, drivin' me crazy."
Let alone: Much less. "He can't even hold a job and support himself, let alone support a family."
Let out: Dismissed. "What time does school let out?"
Lick and a promise: To do something in a hurried or perfunctory fashion. "We don't have time to clean this house so it's spotless. Just give it a lick and a promise."
Mahty raht: Correct. "You mahty raht about that, Awficer. Guess Ah WAS speedin' a little bit."

Tore up: Distraught, very upset. "His wife just left him, and he's all tore up about it."
Uhmewzin: Funny, comical. "Few things are more uhmewzin than a Yankee tryin' to affect a Southern accent, since they invariably address one person as 'y'all when any Southern six-year-old knows 'y'all is always plural because it means 'all of you.'"
Unbeknownst: Lacking knowledge of. "Unbeknownst to them, he had marked the cards."

And Ken, nope. I tell my daughters not to "annoy" each other. "Ill" means sick in my book. Sorry to disappoint! Is kissing someone with snuff in their mouth a Southern tradition?:eek:Apparently it DOES get you "Southerner points," something I learned on the Boiled Peanuts thread. You only can get such points from a true Southerner, but there was some disagreement about where the South starts and ends.
They're so dang exclusive about the Southerner thang, it makes me want to be one, BAD. Yet, unless you are BORN in the South, you must forever be merely a redneck, even if you earn Southerner points.
Got all that?

As much as I hate to put a deadline on the Flightfest... The folks at the General Jackson are putting one on me.
So I need everyone's money to me by September 15, 2006. That is three weeks from this coming Friday.
Just PM me for the address to send it to. I have already received several messages wanting to know where to send it to, and I "hope" I have responded to everyone. If not just send me another message!
Thanks,

However, when he told me that, he meant on the main floor where we are. There are some seats in the balcony, and I think quite a few. But that would split the group, and if I remember right, Kelley said that area is no good.

No one has quite pinned it down, but the most plausible explanation is that it was originally a reference to actor Errol Flynn:

I have been at 2 different motel/hotels near the airport. The Country Inn is the nicest I've been in...but we always end up at the dinky little Red Roof Inn. It's very bland, horribly bland. And the pillows are the equivalent of sleeping on a frozen Eggo, but other than that...it's usually clean. Don likes it because it is cheap. That's not always a good thing.
The last time we stayed at the Hilton downtown, I pulled up the sheets and tried to look and see what type of mattress it is! I couldn't honestly tell because there was no brand name on it, but it did have one of those pillow-top covers that was held onto the bed with large elastic bands. After that discovery, I went out and promptly purchased a pillow-top cover for our bed at home, but it's no where near as soft and marshmellowy as are the Hilton beds, dang it! :shakehead

There are several nicer hotels by the airport that aren't too much more than the Red Roof.

Kelly & Courtney, Do you find the hotels near the airport to be noisy from the planes, or are they well sound-proofed? When I've stayed at the Day's Inn in Detroit, it's been convenient to the rental cars and the airport...but quite noisy at night. I did make a reservation near the airport (BNA) (to make sure I have lodging), but am still "looking". I'd thought being by Opryland would be nice, but the two I checked on there were completely booked already (Fairfield at Opry & Holiday Inn Select). That's what I get for taking my time making reservations. The reservation clerks told me that the Opryland area hotels tend to fill up early because lots of families have reunions there, and it's a big deal to take a trip there.
My AAA book does show great rates for the Red Roof Inn...half the price of the others, at $40-50 for one person. Is it that bad, Courtney?

I've always wondered about this place:
Hotel Preston (http://www.hotelpreston.com/)
I think it used to be a Days Inn or something. Someone bought it, redid it, and is trying to go for that whole "botique hotel (http://www.prescotthotel.com/)" thing that's all the rage in places like San Francisco. You know, where they give you a pet goldfish (http://www.hotelpreston.com/nashville-hotel-amenities.aspx) to have in your room if you want.
And there's a pillow menu. Yes, a menu of pillows.
No idea if they're successful at it, or if it still feels like an old Days Inn.

It's not actually bad, it's just plain vanilla. It's always been very clean and it does not have any funny smells. If you request non-smoking, it smells fine. We have never even seen anyone that looked creepy hanging out there. And trust me, we've stayed there lots. The lobby is very pretty and up to date/modern looking, but the rooms are just your basic white walls, greenish/blue carpet. I do like how the bathrooms are, the shower and the toilet are in one room together and the sink and mirror are out seperate.
I don't mind staying there, it's just not luxurious. It's clean, safe, and I think it has free coffee in the mornings because Don's got it upon check-out. I never go in there with him when he's checking out. If I had some pics from the inside, I'd post them, but I have never bothered taking any of us pre-flight. You can request a room on the first floor and they will give you one if you ask in advance. Don usually tells them his wife has knee problems and can't get up the stairs (lies, lies) and they give us a room on the 1st floor. Truth is, he doesn't like dragging HIS bag up the stairs. Well, me either, actually.
As for the noise, it's honestly never bothered me. Go figure. Don't get me wrong, if a plane takes off you can certainly hear it if it comes over Donelson Pike where the motel is. It seems to me though, that after say 11 p.m. or so, you don't hear the airplanes until morning. Then you will start hearing them again. I don't think they have a ton of night flights there. I've never lost sleep over the noise factor.
I mean, we're planning on staying at it again in November just before our St. Augustine trip, and trust me, I would not stay anywhere I didn't feel safe or if it was nasty. This place is more like if you go to the store and buy yogurt with no flavor in it. You just get the white, plain yogurt instead of the strawberry. It's the same thing, just not as pretty. :tiphat:

Barb - here is a "female traveling alone" tip. DO NOT stay anywhere that doesn't have interior corridors - meaning don't stay where the doors to the room open to the parking lot (like the Red Roof Inn). I am sure the hotel is fine but for safety's sake find somewhere with doors that open into a secure interior hallway.

Good point...I've stayed at both types of hotels, so know what you mean. I can see that there is an additional layer of security with the interior hallways, and notice that the AAA book mentions which it is in their hotel descriptions now. On the other hand, from a "safety from fire and earthquake", I'm more comfortable with the exterior hallways and the instant access to the outside. Call me just slightly claustrophobic... (having lived through a bad earthquake and many aftershocks, I developed the habit of always wanting to know how to get out of a building quickly).

When I'm with Don staying at the Red Roof, I never give much thought about the door opening up to the outside. However, when I'm traveling alone or with my mother, I usually look for a hotel with an inside corridor.
BTW, Kelley, I'm thinking of checking into that Super 8 with the pool for our November pre-flight night. I'm thinking since I'm all about breaking the cycle I've been in prior to my flights, a new hotel perspective might be a good change as well. Thanks for the tip!

...BTW, Kelley, I'm thinking of checking into that Super 8 with the pool for our November pre-flight night. I'm thinking since I'm all about breaking the cycle I've been in prior to my flights, a new hotel perspective might be a good change as well. Thanks for the tip!Good plan! Something about the Red Roof Inn - noises, smells, views, etc. - may be an anxiety trigger for you. Such is common for phobias. Having been in your shoes before, I would book whatever hotel YOU are most comfortable with, even if you have to spend a few more bucks...IMO, I would shoot higher than a Super 8. The Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriot and other hotels groups have real nice accommodations at reasonable prices. Go for it...pamper yourself, it will help you the next morning to get on that plane little hesitation!

Personally I am a total hotel snob and wouldn't dream of staying at anything less than a Hilton, Marriott or the newer Holiday Inn hotels. I guess years of spending 75+ nites each year in hotels has made me a bit jaded...
I want a relatively new hotel with interior corridors, super comfy beds, free high speed wireless internet and a great location. If I am staying somewhere longer than 1 nite then a fridge is a must. If I am staying more than 2 nites then I want a 2 room suite - it just helps to spread out a bit.
I have stayed in plenty of Motel 6s, Days Inns and Super 8s in my life but once I got a taste of Hiltons and Marriotts out there in the world then I just can't go back!

I have never had a problem with spending an extra few dollars for a nicer room. However, my sweet, darling, loveable little husband feels the need to pinch our pennies sometimes so it seems to have become a tradition for us to wind up at the Red Roof. I just think it reminds me of being in a hospital or something, due to the white walls and lack of decor.
The Country Inn was very nice that we stayed at on Donelson Pike. It had the fridge and the microwave and the elevator and all. I may cruise the net and try to find some deals for that night. After all, I can always use the line, "But dear, it's our 1 yr. anniversary trip. Our pre-flight night should be memorable too."

I have become somewhat of a hotel snob as well. We will use our Holiday Inn points in Ireland for 1 night free. All of Andreas trips to L.A. are with Marriot now. I find them to be much better. Marriot and Embassy Suites. I REALLY like E.Suites. Something about the atrium that makes me happy. Maybe it's the water and Koi. We stayed at E.S.'s in Nashville last year and as always, it was great.

Debbie has graciously volunteered to gather up everyone's name, and contact numbers for the Flightfest. This is important in case there are last minute changes etc.
So please PM Deb and provide her with your Name, Cell number, and hotel phone number (if you know it)

I'm so glad you gals brought that up. I was looking at "glitzy" clothes at the mall yesterday, wondering if that was what was expected for the big dinner. But I'm so NOT glitzy, and much prefer comfortable clothes (i.e. long pants, and comfy shoes). Are the guys going to be wearing suits or anything fancy like that? It's not like FORMAL or anything, is it? I was thinking too that maybe it would be chilly on the water, but not sure if we will be strolling around outside looking at the scenery going by, or inside eating and watching the dinner show. Has anyone actually been on the boat already who can clue us in?

I asked our coordinator if there was a dress code. He said "not really".
He explained that you will see a wide variety, everything from suit & tie / dresses, to jeans & t-shirts. In the summer, he said it is not uncommon for folks to wear shorts. The dinner is a bit more formal than their lunch cruises.
It seems the dinner may be a bit above jeans, so I am going to wear khakis, and a matching shirt. I think they call that business casual.
EDIT: As far as the event... What they told me is that we would have about 20-30 minutes after departure to walk around and see things. Then dinner and the show, after the show we will be pulling back into dock. Not much time outside. They did say that there would be a "small" amount of time between the dinner and show to walk about.

...and if you're looking for something to do, it turns out I have a gig that night. I'll be accompanying (on the piano) local jazz singer April Caspari (http://www.myspace.com/aprilcaspari), from 6:30 to 10:00.
And guess what? It's at the Opryland hotel! So if you're staying somewhere near the General Jackson, you'll be right in the neighborhood anyway.
But that's not the best part. The gig is at a place called Ristorante Volare. How weird is that? (Volare means "to fly", and it's been a running joke between Agne and me.)
Anyway, the restaurant is kind of spendy, but one could probably drop by for a glass of wine and/or some dessert and not break the bank too much. Here's what the place looks like:

Yup. And that's why everyone down here in the South runs around in overalls and a big straw hat, carrying jugs of moonshine. It's the perfect all-weather outfit.
http://www.jeffjetton.com/images/forums/overalls.jpg
Figure 1: Standard Nashville Dress
If it gets too hot, you unbutton one or both buttons on the bib part of the overalls and maybe even roll up the legs. The straw hat provides a bit of shade. On really hot days, you can cool off by dumping some of the shine over your head.
When it gets cold again, you button everything back up so you're nice an toasty. Any colder than that, and a few nips from the jug will warm you right up. You can also create an improptu fire using the straw hat.
During the warmer rainy season, hip waders and beer are acceptable substitutes.

Hope this helps.

I've got "layers" scattered all over the livingroom today...why oh why is it so hard to condense down the wardrobe?...I know, ideally you should be able to WEAR all your layers at once....and stop there...that takes care of it for all temperature possibilities...and be willing to wash out clothes in the sink, and wear the same thing for 10 days in a row.... There's a lot to be said for wearing a "uniform" (even if it's shorts, t-shirt, and no shoes!).

If you don't like the weather.... just stick around, it WILL change!
For example, right now all my trees have blown over, it is raining, and it is cold! BUT WAIT.... The temperature is going to go UP over night!!!! Where Ken is they are having tornadoes! Stay safe Ken!
Tonight: Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Temperature rising to around 64 by 5am. South southeast wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Then we warm up even more...
Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 75. South wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
82 degrees!!! Is it summer again???
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming south southwest between 5 and 10 mph.
Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 59. South wind around 5 mph.
Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 68. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north northwest.
Thursday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. North northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 62. North northwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.
Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 42. North wind around 5 mph becoming southeast.
At least Festday should be normal...
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.
Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48.
Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62.

NOTE: The trees that have blown over are landscaping trees that have recently been planted. Didn't want you guys to think that we are a complete disaster! :D
AND... My idiot neighbors are outside sitting around a portable fire pit in the middle of this. They are from Vegas... so go figure!

Jeff - TN, I did get your PM about adding one to Monell's, so that would be 19.
BNA TOUR
Arrive at the Southwest Airlines ticket counter at 7:00 am. Have two forms of ID available, preferably both being with photo IDs. One needs to be government issued.
CAPITAL GRILL
No major information. They are going to hold an area for us. Everyone is responsible for their own meal. We should be sitting down at 11:00 am, and out by 12:00 - 1:00 PM. From that time and General Jackson time (6:00 PM) we have no planned events. May I suggest a nap???
GENERAL JACKSON
They will be forwarding me the information about where to meet, and when. I WILL Have this posted HERE on this thread by Wednesday.
MONELL'S
Same as Capital Grill. We will meet there at 11:00 am. I will post directions Wednesday on this thread.
Any questions, changes, corrections, etc... please place them on this thread.
Looking forward to a great weekend!
