This is spiffytoo, spiffyone's husband. I talked to her on the phone a little while ago and she landed safely in Phoenix. By now she is on her way to Tucson on I-10, or perhaps is already there. She promises a post later with the details, but she told me to tell you two things:
1) The flight was very smooth today, even during the takeoff, though headwinds meant about 15-20 minutes extra on the trip.
2) We previewed the Phoenix-Tucson area with Google Earth ahead of time, and she says it really does look just like what you see on the screen. I can't wait until the day I can have wireless Internet throughout the flight - I'll just sit there with Google Earth the whole time, tracking our progress.
By the way, I think Google Earth can be a great tool for the FOF community - though it can be addictive! We're still trying to decide whether or not to fly next February to the mountaintop airport in Huntington, WV (which freaks me out a little, having previously experienced the similar airport in Charleston), and Google Earth's plane's-eye view is a great tool for deciding if we're up to it. (Probably not, we think; better to drive from Columbus, OH.)
Next time you're driving through Charleston, look up in the mountains north of downtown. That's not a lookout tower for hikers; that's the control tower at CRW. But the upside is that there are three gates, one baggage claim, no line, and you can park right by the front door - in short, none of the bedlam that infects PVD these days. I'm sure Spiffy will have more to say about that.
I miss you, spiffy!
