Hi all -

I leave this Saturday for a trip with my spouse from Providence to Indianapolis (by way of Detroit) to be godparents in my med school roommate's baby's christening.

We're flying NWA (already I like it because it reminds me of the old rap group) - I have never flown them before so that is a source of anxiety; also we'll be flying Airbuses which I never have before.

Otherwise I'm okay with it.

The NEXT week I fly ALONE FOR THE FIRST TIME from Providence to Phoenix on SWA. Good = direct flight, familiar with SWA. Bad = ALONE.

Here's what worries me...I don't get that freaked out about flying anymore as long as everything is familiar. But every NEW thing - new airlines, new planes, flying alone etc - kind of freaks me out. I'm like Rain Man, everything has to be exactly the same every time.

I think I will be okay (I have never come even close to getting off a plane), but I really worry about something unexpected happening - like if I got bumped, or if we had an aborted takeoff, or a funny light came on and we had to make an unscheduled landing, or we were diverted to another airport because of bad weather, etc, etc.

I know those are all perfectly fine things that happen all the time and are not dangerous...but I really worry (especially when I am flying alone) that something like that would send me right over the edge.

So...if anyone has flown NWA, on Airbuses, or alone...jump in and tell me it will be okay...it really does help me to read those things ahead of time. (I have reached that point with my FOF where it is actually possible to console me, as opposed to at the beginning when no matter what anyone said, I was still nervous).

You're in luck. I have flown on NWA, Airbuses and alone! LOL

The only thing I don't like about flying alone is that if you are on an empty flight, you get bored easily. And when you have layovers, again, you get bored. And if you're not familiar with the airports you could get lost.

Just remember that most people would be glad to help you find where you are going in an airport. Just two days ago I helped a woman who could not speak any english find her gate. Also, take along things like puzzle books to keep you occupied and keep your mind going.

NWA is a typical airline. I never hear anything astonishingly great about it, but it is what my family tends to always fly since my mother's work uses NWA (and that is where she gets her frequent flier miles). I have heard that their flights have been pretty booked lately...so be prepared for a packed flight. I think it has to do with their flight attendants being on strike.

Airbuses are nice. Don't have a negative thing at all to say about them. Sit back and enjoy the ride on that one! Not saying its the best plane out there, but still...

About DTW...it can be a really confusing airport. They don't really have very many signs around.

My FAVORITE part of DTW is the tunnel between Concourse A and Concourses B & C. Check it out at the link below. It flashes the different colors and plays crazy music. It seems it would cause seizures in some people, though.

NWA. Fly them ALL the time. Check out the day spa in terminal A near the center if you have a long layover or grab a black forest ham bagel sandwich from Einstein Brothers if you are in Terminal B or C.

Airbuses. They are fine. Remember the noises are a little different than on a Boeing - like the barking dog sound. Little roomier than a Boeing.

Flying Alone. LOVE IT! PREFER IT! I can have my personal alone time - listen to MY tunes on the Ipod, read a smut novel or Cosmo, work Sudoku puzzles in pen or just SLEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

You'll be surprised how normal you will feel; although you will be alone, you will have thoughts of friends and they will be thinking about you!

Here is the thread for my first solo:

" ...It was a wonderful experience and found that somewhere along the line I gained independent confidence as flyer. And that means it's time for me to officially throw all crutches out the window; all Susan has to do is continue to being a wonderful travel companion.
...Again, I can't thank you enough for your support here...:grouphug: ...I have taken another big step forward and found another success, which came very easy once I made the commitment to do it! And then did it!!!

And, wow, does it feel good!!!
Mark :) :) :)
