Ok so this was really stupid. I started watching this movie without having any idea what it was about. Fearless with Jeff Bridges. Turns out it's about a plane crash which Bridges survives and which gives him a whole new take on life. As soon as i saw where it was going I should have stopped watching, but as the story itself was quite interesting, I convinced myself I could handle it! The movie goes back to the imminent crash several times as flashbacks, and the emergency descent is quite drawn out, with lots of focus on various passengers reactions!
Of course since then I haven't been able to get this image out of mind! I don't have any flights coming up, but when I do surely will still be thinking about this, unless I can put it to rest.
The reason for the crash is to do with "complete hydraulic failure". Could this really happen?? Surely there's a backup system in place! I made a point of not watching that Tom Hanks movie, Survivor I think it was, because I had heard that the plane crash scene was very realistic! :banghead

Hiya
I too always seem to catch a movie like this the week before a flight. The best way to deal with this is to just imagine Jeff Bridges standing on the film set (that bears no resemblance to an aircraft, surrounded by 40 crew doing take after take, until it is just right and they know they will scare the cr*p out of us
Final Destination, Alive, Castaway, and Fight Club all have these types of scenes
Anything with Flight XXX in the title is a TV movie and is safe to watch as the special affects department do not have the budget:wired

Cast Away. Do yourself a favor. DO NOT see it.
Although, I must say, when I actually fly, I never think about that movie. Perhaps the little censor in my brain who is smarter than me won't even let me go there.

Hollywood just LOVES to make movies about plane crashes.
It is such a odd thing to happen it makes for a good plot.
Once I watched a movie (forgot the title, but it had Harrison Ford in it) about a Ford's wife having an affair with a married man. They were on a jet for a little romantic get-away, anyway the plane crashed and they both died side-by-side.
It was quite visual. I had a flight the very next day, and had a hard time.
So I have quit watching those movies, I also gave up my mistress :shocked (Just joking)
On my flight to England I watched DAY AFTER TOMORROW... there is a scene they SNUCK in there about a plane in severe turbulence. So here I am ON A PLANE watching a plane in severe turbulence. Funny... it did not bother me! Go figure.
As for your question about a complete hydraulic failure... There are back-ups to back ups.
Nearly impossible to have a complete hydraulic failure. They also now route the hydraulic lines separate, so if one fails, whatever caused it to fail will not affect the back-ups.
That is my non-techi answer. You might want to go over to Captain Ray's forum and ask him about hydraulic failures, I am sure he will give a better answer.
Bottom line, Hollywood is very creative... hey maybe with our imaginations we should all go to work there!
Take care,
Mark

Hey Mark, glad to hear you were joking about giving up your mistress...they can be hard to find ;)
I just watched Garden State and there is a scene in there where the plane is losing pressure or altitude and everyone is panicking and the O2 masks are flapping around everywhere. I knew the scene was in there but really wanted to see the movie. It will probably take a while for the image to be gone. I usually avoid all movies involving a crash.

That was a bad idea! I know what you mean about getting drawn into the storyline though. Jeff Bridges, wasn't he the guy in "Starman" and "K-Pax"? (great actor in my opinion). Over here in the UK we had a series of documentaries last year about crashes and how investigators set out to locate the black box recorders. It was not very nice to see and had some amateur film footage taken by eye-witnesses. Fortunately, such things are very rare though. We mustn't dwell on this sort of imagery. So many checks are done on aircraft these days to make sure they're safe. Anyway, don't lose any sleep over it!!

I think I mentioned this once in another post. When we flew out to Arizona---they played Lost in Space. On the way back they played the Titanic. I guess I should have been happy that it wasn't Castaway...although I was so devastated about Tom Hanks losing Wilson---that I didn't even focus on the plane crash. anyone know where I can find a fear of losing your volleyball chat???

Hey, Guys --
Don't you all think it's great that Our New Guy's first involvement with the board has to do with crashes??! Way to go Simon! We did say Welcome to you not even a few days ago, right??
Seriously -- we meant it!
Anyway, don't forget books to read on board -- Pilot's Wife (actually, it was an incredible book!) Oh, and for your visual entertainment, how 'bout "Bounce". That was out a few years ago. Gwyneth Paltrow and I forget-who-else. Anyway, the plane takes off, and (I forget who) is dozing in his First Class seat, they show the plane do a very, very soft "bump", he opens his eyes, and then they're informing the new widow of her status. That "bump" sticks with me ALWAYS. I saw that stupid movie two years ago, and still see that 2-second bump and his eyes open. God, I hate that! Not the scene with Tom Hanks hanging on for dear life -- none of the dumb Airport movies -- just that one stupid 2-second scene.
ARGHH!!! Monica -- help me kill that monster!!!:wired
Oh, yeah, go ahead and laugh -- you KNOW I'm not alone. You ALL have stuff like this. SHARE IT!!!

Thanks everyone...I feel a bit calmer already! I was curious about whether you all made a point of avoiding such movies. I think they should have an alert or somthing when they SNEAK in plane crash scenes!!:noevil
