I want to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragements. I am quite proud of my accomplishment :-) I have even started looking into flights to DC the week of St. Patrick's. I'm a little nervous the about the weather though, it can be so unpredictable in the north east. The thought of flying in or out of ice or snow kind of freaks me out. As you all know it never snows in Miami :-)

I was wondering, which airlines and planes do you all suggest would be a good choice? I keep seeing 737,738 and MD80. There just numbers to me can someone please help me.

Thank you,

TJ

TJ,

The 737 is a Boeing 737-700 the 738 is a Boeing 737-800. The MD80 is McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series(I believe those used to be called a DC-9-80 or maybe they still are). You can take a look at them on Airliners.net if you would like.

If given the choice I always choose Boeing over McDonnell Douglas (although I believe Boeing now owns whatever is left of McD. Douglas). Although both planes have wonderful safety records, I just personally put a lot of faith and trust in Boeing.

Also, an MD-80 is going to be a bit narrower. I believe they use a three-two seating in coach while 737's use a three-three. I once flew from Columbus, OH to Detroit, MI on an MD-80 and then from Detroit to Paris, France on a DC-10. I can't really put my finger on the why, but I just didn't like the planes. (I must say that the airline, Northwest, didn't help. they were so rude and the service was terrible.) Hope that helps a little.

TJ---just plan on coming our way. Remember they won't fly if the conditions are not safe. It may be blustery at St. Patrick's day but even if it does snow by then it usually melts quite quickly.
I have the Boeing preference as well but I think that is based more on FOF comfort stuff than any real facts.
i've heard nothing but good stuff about the MD80.

TJ,

You should be proud of yourself, and I am glad that the board was able to help you.

All the aircraft that you indicated are good aircraft.

And any of the domestic carriers are safe.

Take care,

Mark

Just in case I came off that way...

I didn't mean to imply that Northwest (or any other domestic carrier) is unsafe. I just have rather high expectations for service and NWA did not meet those.

Nich,

Not at all! I did not take it that way. Your post was fine!

AND... let me add that I said "domestic" because that is what the subject flights involved. I'm not indicating that Non-US carriers are bad or unsafe.

Ok, enough of the disclaimers! ha ha

Sorry you felt that NWA was so rude. That is the airline for which I fly, and the DC-10 is the plane I fly too. My plane does not serve Paris, France anymore though, as we have been replaced by the much newer Airbus A-330.

JohnOkerson - :welcome . Fill us in on the scoop with NWA. Are they adding any new planes to their fleet? We fly NWA several times a year with the band I work with (especially for our DTW shows!). I ended up with 40K miles on NWA in 2004 alone!

JohnOkerson,

First of all :welcome the best FOF site on the web!!!

Sorry about my NWA comments. Like I said, I'm sure they are a very safe airline I just had a couple of bad experiences. It's just one of those things. When I think of NWA, I think of the people I dealt with. That probably isn't right because I'm sure that the ten people with whom I had contact were not an actual or accurate representation of the company.

Also, my "bad" flight was on NWA. It was supposed to depart not long after the Concord crashed out of CDG in July 2001.

And of course, the DC-10 is a fine and extremely beautiful aircraft. (and wouldn't I love to get behind the controls of one of those beautiful babies) but, from a passenger comfort standpoint I find the Boeing models better. And, for reasons unknown even to myself, I just have a mental "block" against riding in the DC/MD aircraft. Although, there are many people who would disagree with me on that and that is not to say that I wouldn't, just that I would try to get a Boeing first.

Hope to hear a lot from you! Always great to have another pilot around!

Nich,

I know what you mean. My bad flight was on a Delta L-1011 and I think I would go into a panic attack if I had to climb onboard another L-1011. Luckily Delta doesnt have any more in their fleet so that wont happen any time soon. Flying out of CHS I am pretty much stuck with Delta since I am usually headed West (NWA only goes from CHS to DTW).

What kind of plane was your bad flight on?
