Once again, my family is discussing a trip to Phoenix for Christmas. Two adults, six children ages four up to sixteen. Driving takes 2-1/2 days including two rooms in a hotel, two nights. Gas, food, etc. Still, it seems to work out to be less expensive than buying eight plane tickets and renting a car in Phoenix. Plus, the kids LOVE the road trip.

Any advice?

I say send your husband and kids on a road trip and buy yourself a nice first class plane ticket!

In all seriousness, road trips can be awesome. See if you can find some "world's largest ball of twine" type things to visit; that will be fun for the kids.

By the way, I know if I don't look someone will, so here's a link to the largest ball of twine (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/MNDARtwine.html). Are you planning to drive near Cawker City, Kansas or Darwin, Minnesota?

Even though I fly now, I still love a good road trip. You miss a lot of the country from the air.

Oh I don't know about that! You can normally see a lot out of the window of your plane...if its a clear day. Besides, country takes forever to get through and after a while you get sick and tired of it.

Personally, I can't stand to drive anywhere more than 4 hours away...and that's even pushing it. Add six bored and whining children to that. I would be able to tolerate it, but I wouldn't enjoy it. That's for sure.

I'll skip the twine and rocks along the road for some nice salad in a first class seat.

Right now, I think we'd go to Nashville on the first night, Little Rock, AR the next day (Hubby met governor today, and he said he'd give us a personal tour of the capitol if we visited), Amarillo on night 3 (what's to do in Amarillo??), and Flagstaff/Grand Canyon the last night.

I haven't scoped out the return trip yet. I think it would be fun to drive. Before we've always done super-long days, and were in a hurry to "get there." This time we're talking more about taking a longer time to get there and enjoying the trip more.

Yeah--any weird things to see along I-40 that you know of, pass along. Our oldest is only 2 years from college, so I see the "whole family trip" opportunities dwindling before my eyes. Can't believe we're this far down the road of life!!!

And Mark: You know Nashville--any gotta-see restaurant that's not too expensive for dinner the night we arrive? You'd be invited, of course! I have to check dates with hubster, but I'm thinking Dec. 14th or 15th.

Hee hee! This is a lot more fun than working!

Um, ya know Mark's not the only one who lives in Nashville. Hint, hint. :D

Anyhoo, the "ball of twine" site that NFF linked to earlier actually has a lot of other neat "roadtrip" stuff you can explore. Check it out (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/)!

Your oldest might be at the age where reading a good, classic roadtrip book beforehand would really set the mood. How about On the Road (http://www.amazon.com/Road-Penguin-20th-Century-Classics/dp/0140185216) or Blue Highways (http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Highways-Journey-into-America/dp/0316353299)?

Jean... You got it! As Jeff wrote there are quite a few Nashville folks here. Although I DO NOT live in Nastyville... just right outside of it.

There are tons of interesting places, so as the date gets closer, we can work somthing out, and make it a mini-fest!

Cool!!! My very own flightfest! With rumpled, travel-stained kids to boot! I'll definitely keep everyone posted as we make more solid plans. Thanks for the website links.
