View Full Version : Anxious for some reason?

I am flying this Friday (ATL to TPA) and I'm feeling a little worried for some reason! :\ I have flown this route more than enough times, I think I did this to myself because I checked the weather and it says thunderstorms in Tampa on Friday! Ugh! (bumps bumps and more bumps)

I've been fortunate during my last few flights (haven't flown since early November) that they were all relatively uneventful - so now I worry about the turbulance due to the weather down there!

Anyway - any "words of wisdom" will be great!! Thank you.

"...so now I worry about the turbulence due to the weather down there!"

Beautiful weather down here in Tampa...some rain anticipated for Thur-Fri-Sat due to a minor cold front moving through.

Check out Capt. Ray's report under Flight Reports:

p197.ezboard.com/ffearoff...D=92.topic (http://p197.ezboard.com/ffearofflying16582frm7.showMessage?topicID=92.topi c)

He says in this report: "If it makes you feel better, feel free to hold your hands up over your head and scream like you are on a roller coaster." :jump While he makes humor a part of coping, there is no danger as he told us many times.

This is short flight, less than an hour in the air...barely enough time for one beer and a burp! :p

We flew this route right after the fifth hurricane hit Florida, skimmed Tampa, and was passing Atlanta to the east as tropical storm. :thundercloud Some bumps, but nothing to get upset about. Your flight should be just fine. If you have bumps, just enjoy them...for soon you will have landed safely!

Have a great trip to our area!

Hi Marley, how are you?
This is unscientific(but hey I never claimed otherwise)...I can't tell you the amount of times I checked weather and worried and what I thought would happen never did. So, my very unscientific conclusion is that we try to figure out when there might be turb and usually end up reading the map wrong or the weather changes on us.
It was supposed to be 45 and sunny today. And I'm looking at snow as I type...Monica

Thanks St.PeteMark and Monica for the encouragement! I'll keep checking the board for good trip reports, etc! Thank you again -- Jana:peace

Hi, Jana,

I know you have probably been repeating the 'turbulence isn't dangerous mantra'--so just keep doing that if it helps. Check out the Les Posen site under 'resources' on the main TF page, and look for his discussion on turb and why it's uncomfortable. You may already know about this, but it might help to read it again.

Dunno if you are a window-seat flier (I am!) but I really think it helps, when near big towering cumulus or eyeball range of t-storms, to look outside, expect turb near them, and note also how little the plane moves during the bumps.

You probably know that famous verse of Joni Mitchell's:

Rows and flows of angel hair,
And ice cream castles in the air,
And feathered canyons ev’rywhere--
I’ve looked at clouds that way;

'feathered canyons everywhere'--that's what we see amid towering cumulus when it's bumpy. And they are beautiful!!! :nod

Enjoy! Look at this flight as another chance to thumb your nose at the trickster.

Hey Jana,

Weather :thundercloud is my biggest fear when it comes to flying (stemming back from my one bad flight) and last year I had to fly from CHS (Charleston, SC) to Nashville thru Atlanta when one of the hurricanes/tropical storms was rolling THRU ATL. I was very nervous and went and talked to the Captain and he reassured me that we are flying OVER the weather and that if conditions in ATL were not ideal that we would not land there. Sure enough, we didnt have anything more than a few bumps (light chop) on takeoff and landing - cruise was eerily smooth.

Talk to the pilots! They dont want to fly into bad weather either and they wont put themselves or you in any danger. Remember - they want to get there safely just like you do!

Hey Jana,

My last few anxious flights have been because of weather... on all of them ended up being some of the best, smootheist flights! Go figure!

It is hard to guide what our flight is going to be like by the weather we see on the news. It can be so different up there.

But the most important thing to remember is that the pilots are NOT going to take off, land, or fly into anything that is remotely dangerous!

Great to see you around again. :wave .. don't be a stranger!

See ya,

Mark

Hi All - I had a great trip home to Florida. Weather was a little cloudy on the decent into Tampa. (yuck) But I'm here to say ... I did it ... and WITHOUT xanax. So now I'm up to SIX flights - no drugs! I'm so happy. Yesterdays flight was smoother than glass. (don't you love those) We got to see a beautiful sunset and cruised into Atlanta with no problems and even 10 minutes early - have you ever heard of such a thing!!

Thanks for the support prior to my flight!

Mark - I put my tracking information up -- but it looks like it was deleted?! Did you have some lost threads on the "switchover"?

Have a great week all ... (a short one for some of us!)

Hi Jana...

I am glad your trip went well!

Sorry about your post....

They did the post transfer on Thursday afternoon, and we went live on Friday evening. So any post between Thursday PM and Friday PM did not make it over.

What some have been doing is going over and copying the post/thread, and then pasting it here!

But thanks for the update on your flight!

Mark
