This was on Yahoo this morning. I think I agree with most that lifting the ban on cell phone use on the plane would be a bad idea. What does everyone else think? :think

I personally don't see what all the hoo ha is about. They don't work at cruise altitude anyway, so what does it really matter?

I think cell phones on planes is a horrible idea. Not for safety, but for sanity. Every time I get on the el, some idiot is shouting into his (or her) cell phone about whatever is going on in his (or her) life at the time, with absolutely no regard to anyone else on the train who might not care to know that he really wants a smoothie maker for Christmas or that Dennis is having a fight with his girlfriend.
What is so urgent that it can't wait until you land?
An airplane is the one place in the world we can just sit quietly anymore. I don't want that taken away from me.

I see myself sitting next to a bored 14-year-old who spends the entire three-hour flight calling his friends to read them the SkyMall catalog.
(I actually did sit in front of a kid who did this preflight, until the flight attendant told him to stop -- it took repeated attempts by her, plus some words from his seatmate, before he agreed to put the phone away.)
