Wow!

From my 2 ever flights, I actually have enough United miles for a free upgrade on my next flight!

awww

well, my flight to chicago wasn't full, so maybe I'll get lucky with one like that when I go again!

I bumped someone off the upgrade list yesterday - much to their annoyance. I have Gold status on Delta and walked up to the gate 35 minutes before the flight to add my name to the upgrade list. I shot up to the top of the upgrade list and got the last seat in First (unfortunately it was an aisle bulkhead seat).

Good luck with your upgrade.

(unfortunately it was an aisle bulkhead seat).

I try to avoid the bulkhead too. It's a pain not to have underseat storage.

This is a little off-topic, but I wanted to take the opportunity to tell the story of the crazy bulkhead woman on my last flight:

I was in the second row (no first class on Ted) and there was this awful woman in the first row. She had three carry-ons (violation, I think) -- two big roller things plus a backpack. She got really nasty with the FA while struggling to get a roller thing into the overhead. The FA tried to tell her how to position it, and she snapped back angrily because it wasn't fitting, but finally she relented and did what the FA told her. The second roller thing wasn't going to fit at all, and the captain offered to store it wherever the pilots store their stuff. (He wasn't trying to make nice with a hot babe, by the way -- she was a crazy-looking hag.) She let him take it and then she tried to put her last piece, the backpack, under her seat.

The FA told her she couldn't use the space under her seat because it didn't belong to her, and she said, "Of course it belongs to me! It's my seat!"

What a moron. By now, we other passengers were just looking at each other.

I don't know how the under-the-seat-backpack issue resolved, but I couldn't help but wonder if low-cost Ted attracts weirdos like that. I can't imagine seeing such a thing on a regular United flight.

So anyway, yeah, bulkhead sucks. Sucks worse when it's not first class. Sucks even worse when it's not first class and there's a crazy person sitting there.

P.S. -- Paula, Mitch taught me a neat trick for getting a first class seat. I've tried every one I could find, and this is a really nice one. When you go online to book a free flight using miles, change the default "coach" selection to "first class." LOTS more dates and times open up, and every time I've done it, I get a confirmed first class seat immediately, no waiting list. It costs more miles than a free flight in coach, but it's worth it, with the larger selection of flights and the first class seat.

P.P.S. -- Also consider getting the United Visa card if you think United is going to be your airline of choice. The miles do add up.

Leslie -

I don't have enough miles yet for a free flight, just an upgrade with a purchased ticket, but I'll keep that in mind if I ever get that many! I'm not sure if United is my "choice" its just that the 2 trips I've made have been with them, mainly due to them having the schedule I needed. I have nothing against trying another airline, but wondering if it would be better for now to stick with the one I "know".

I would have turned down the bulkhead on a longer flight since I have DVT and have to be able to stretch out my legs. The aisle wouldnt work either since I get nauseated if I am not sitting by the window. I'm difficult, I know.

On my first of four flights last weekend, I had a middle seat and I was much more nauseated on this one since it was hard to see out the window. I'm short and don't need a lot of leg room so I'll make sure I always book a window seat in the future!

Always book an "A" seat if you want to be assured of a window. If there is an aircraft change then your "E" window seat may become a middle seat. I learned that one the hard way and now I try to always book an "A" since that is always a window no matter what type of plane you are on.
