What Made Me Fly
In short, getting from Point A to Point B. My favorite singer - guess who http://www.getonthatplane.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif - was going to be performing in Las Vegas (Point B) for 10 days, filling in for Celine Dion who was taking a short break. I was in St. Petersburg (Point A), 2,500 miles away. I didn't want to spend 3+3 days driving, nor did I have the time. I had been grounded for about 15 years...in fact, I had resolved myself that I would never get on a plane again. Since I knew Gloria was winding down the touring part of her career, I couldn't let this opportunity pass by!
First step was that I spent a fortune on tickets for six shows. Now, I HAD to get there or kick my butt for wasting so much money. Next step was to book airline tickets - went affordable First Class with AirTran, hoping additional attention would be gained with First Class (which it did).
OK, for the final step...preparation! I have had chronic anxiety/panic disorder for over 25 years and was seeing an MD therapist on a regular basis. Over time, he had determined what combination of meds worked best for me. He felt I was ready and would not have any problems based on my progress over the years.
However, I didn't feel that way. I was afraid of having panic attacks with no place to go to recover. So I looked for additional help on the Internet and found an established FOF site, of which many of us old timers had been members. I paid for the pricey full SOAR tape course. I worked with that program every night for an entire month. I also participated with that site's message board. By the end of the month, I knew I was ready. I used and developed tools to reduce anxiety and also gained a new and knowledgeable perspective about flying.
On the day of the flight, there was no hesitation going to the airport or getting on the plane. When the plane took off, I was in HEAVEN and feeling so good with what I had done. I was really proud of myself! I had great flights to and from Las Vegas...some nervousness pre-flight but no panic attacks then or since.
During this whole process, I had a lot of help and support from my wife, Susan, for which I am so thankful!!! In the beginning she was my support partner; now I am her equal flying companion when we travel together. I also now fly solo for fun and for business.
Well, that was just a start of better things to come. I now have over 90 flights and 90,000 miles. Flying has not only opened a new world of opportunities and experiences, but has also helped improve and/or overcome my fears/anxieties of other once-feared situations...bridges, interstate driving, heights (like the Empire State Building), and others.
I continued to receive support and more information with participation with this site, Taking Flight. I attended Flight Fests in Phoenix (3), San Francisco, New York City, Nashville, and Orlando. A big bonus is making friendships with members...they become your extended family!!!

What Made Me Fly
In short, getting from Point A to Point B. My favorite singer - guess who http://www.getonthatplane.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif - was going to be performing in Las Vegas (Point B) for 10 days, filling in for Celine Dion who was taking a short break. I was in St. Petersburg (Point A), 2,500 miles away. I didn't want to spend 3+3 days driving, nor did I have the time. I had been grounded for about 15 years...in fact, I had resolved myself that I would never get on a plane again. Since I knew Gloria was winding down the touring part of her career, I couldn't let this opportunity pass by!
First step was that I spent a fortune on tickets for six shows. Now, I HAD to get there or kick my butt for wasting so much money. Next step was to book airline tickets - went affordable First Class with AirTran, hoping additional attention would be gained with First Class (which it did).
OK, for the final step...preparation! I have had chronic anxiety/panic disorder for over 25 years and was seeing an MD therapist on a regular basis. Over time, he had determined what combination of meds worked best for me. He felt I was ready and would not have any problems based on my progress over the years.
However, I didn't feel that way. I was afraid of having panic attacks with no place to go to recover. So I looked for additional help on the Internet and found an established FOF site, of which many of us old timers had been members. I paid for the pricey full SOAR tape course. I worked with that program every night for an entire month. I also participated with that site's message board. By the end of the month, I knew I was ready. I used and developed tools to reduce anxiety and also gained a new and knowledgeable perspective about flying.
On the day of the flight, there was no hesitation going to the airport or getting on the plane. When the plane took off, I was in HEAVEN and feeling so good with what I had done. I was really proud of myself! I had great flights to and from Las Vegas...some nervousness pre-flight but no panic attacks then or since.
During this whole process, I had a lot of help and support from my wife, Susan, for which I am so thankful!!! In the beginning she was my support partner; now I am her equal flying companion when we travel together. I also now fly solo for fun and for business.
Well, that was just a start of better things to come. I now have over 90 flights and 90,000 miles. Flying has not only opened a new world of opportunities and experiences, but has also helped improve and/or overcome my fears/anxieties of other once-feared situations...bridges, interstate driving, heights (like the Empire State Building), and others.
I continued to receive support and more information with participation with this site, Taking Flight. I attended Flight Fests in Phoenix (3), San Francisco, New York City, Nashville, and Orlando. A big bonus is making friendships with members...they become your extended family!!!
