Hi all

This is a lame question, and I feel a 1st class wuss for asking, but I fly next week and my biggest problem with flying is the taking off  I just hate the feeling that the plane has stopped and you feel all strange and "up in the air" - duh! I can't explain it! Anyway, I don't know if I will get the chance to choose my seat or not, but if I can, is there any position on the plane which would help reduce the feeling of taking off - i.e. the back, front or middle?

Many thanks! :D

Hi Kelly,

I recall the sensation that you speak of and I agree that it does feel disconcerting. One helpful suggestion would be to get a thorough explanation as to why the plane feels like it is 'braking' or 'falling backwards'. It's not really 'falling', and there is a very good explanation for this whole event.

Sometimes knowing the "why's" behind something can diminish its impact.

I recall reading a post somewhere on this site that described this phenomenon step-by-step throughout the take-off process from the mechanical side (noises, changes in engine velocity) as well as how we experience it physiologically (how our inner-ear/balance can trick us into believing things are more out of equilibrium than they are) etc etc. I can't find it off-hand but maybe someone else knows of it - or can just zip off an explanation right now.

It really might help you feel a bit better about this stage of flight.

From my personal experience, I suggest close to the front in order to reduce your field of vision - one less sensation to deal with on take off. Being in the rear of the plane use to bother me...having to look down the long aisle to the front. Now I could care less; anywhere on the plane is fine with me...except within two rows of the restrooms! :)

Very good reply Sean!

Kelly, there are no "lame" questions. As the good Captain Stark says, "with knowledge comes comfort". Ask any and every question you have and soak up all the replies. No need to ponder anything regarding flying when we have this group.

 Jeff

...so much for your replies, Sean, Jeff, St Pete Mark, Kallie - your words are all so reassuring and as ever have helped me to feel less anxious! I am not sure if we are allocated seats or not, but if not, I'll be running down that aisle hoping to get as near the front as possible!! Thanks again :)
