Dear Caption,

I am so panicky once the door is closed. I feel like there is no or very weak air flowing in the cabin. I have paper fun, ventolin, chewing gum etc which I "thought" could enlarge my lung & give me deeper breath. I even bang on my heart to get more oxygen.

I feel the air is thinner on ground than up on the air. That's why I am extremely afraid when the plane is waiting for takeoff or taxi. Both ways are no fun. If the plane has to queue for long prior to takeoff, my God, I really go mad and forbid anyone around me to talk. I thought they will consume more air .

Is there a space that can give me more air ( I always avoid taking rear seat as I will be the last to leave the plane) or whereabout I can control the air nozzle, if this is still available. I love the older plane where the nozzles are above my head. I can turn all facing down to me. Now everything is centrally controlled.

Any idea what's happening to me & how can I overcome this fear.

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Asking this question on the general forum may help. Capt. Stark has written a book and a chapter may address you fear. All I can tell you is the technical aspect of the plane.

A pressurised aircraft isnt perfectly sealed. Air is allowed to vent over board. The system works by pumping more air into the cabin than is lost. If you have any further questions please ask.

My guess it that's an issue of panic and has NOTHING to do with breathable air or the plane's pressurizaton. If you're banging on your chest for air, you're probable experiencing some form of panic attack. I second Royd's suggestion. Post this on the regular forum and lets try to address it froma panic perspective.

I copied this over to the main forum so we can also take a look at it from the persective of fear and anxiety. Hope that helps!
