In today's NY Daily News:
Smarty-Scan Debuts at JFK
A Boarding pass can tell a lot more about travelers then whether they have an aisle or window seat.
A new machine unveiled at Kennedy Airport yesterday can instantly determine if the bearer of the boarding pass has been handling drugs or explosives.
Called the Ionscan Document Scanner, the $150,000 device adds another layer of security at the airport's international terminals - and another hoop for travelers to jump through.
"This is part of TSA's effort to expand its capabilities on explosives detection, We're fairly confident of its capabilities."
The boarding passes of all passengers entering the gate will be scanned, just before the passengers pass through the metal detectors on their way to their gates.
The faintest traces of explosives on the pass will register immediately - a telltale sign that the traveler may have had recent contact with deadly materials.
The machine is sensitive enough to detect traces transferred onto the boarding pass even after the traveler has washed his or her hands. "If you come in contact in any way with explosives, it would be detected."
The scanner, first used in Israel, is being tested at Kennedy on a 30-day trial, It is the first scanner designed to detect explosives on tickets and other travel documents, such as passports and driver licenses.
Ionscan can be calibrated to detect cocaine, heroin and other drugs. While the machine can give false readings, officials said that happens less than 1% of the time.

I think this is a good thing and should be installed at all airports.
