My Take-off video from Tampa airport...heading for Phoenix, was approved by the FlightLevel350 website: http://www.flightlevel350.com/

This video was shot in recording mode with my little Cannon S230 ELPH digital camera. I compressed/converted the .avi file to a .wmv file per instructions of FlightLevel350 tutorial.

The easiest way to locate the video is to search site by... StPeteMark

This is the search result...click on below link to get to summary:

http://flightlevel350.com/search.php?action=search&type=detail&start=0&cat=0&where=addinfo1&date=0&sort=datetime&order=desc&match=exact&keyword=StPeteMark

Then click on thumbnail photo to see video. You can also download the file from this location...file size, 13.9 MB

Soon I will try to get approval of my recording of landing and take-off from Phoenix.

Enjoy!

That was so awesome!! Great video!! I am actually looking foward to my first flight now after reading Ray's book, taking the online fear, and watching aviation videos from the cabin's perspective. I'm now prepared!! You all have been such a great help!! I look forward to your other videos, StPeteMark!

Question: I thought you had to turn off all elecrical devices during takeoff so I guess video cameras are okay? Or did you sneak it?? ;-) I'd like to video tape our flight (on the way back) to record how it was to review for my next flight. Yes, I'm already planning a second, before I've gone on my first!

...Videocams and regular cameras are fine. No need to worry about doing something "illegal" by using them. ...Debbie

Each FA apparently has their own opinion on this...on the landing back in Tampa at night, the FA saw the "glowing" display of my camera and said, "SIR, you have to turn your camera OFF now."

When I took this camera recording, the FAs were in their seats for take-off. My camera is very small and not obvious during the day, especially when my body is blocking it from view as I am parallel to the window.

So, I don't really know. Never had a problem on any other flight...maybe because it was just never seen by the FAs? Technically, digital and most films cameras are electrical devices (batteries), but there are so many photos and videos taken from inside planes, and even from INSIDE the cockpit, that it leads me to think they are OK during take-off and landing.

I would say call your airline for an official opinion; or, ask an FA during boarding; or just take your chances like most do.

Deb, about the flight report, it was such an uneventful flight with no anxiety that I don't know what to say...eventually I'll put something together. And, yes, I was breathing, but very calmly. :)

Think if I watch this cool video enough time, I won't be so afraid of taking off and landings? :rotflmao:

Cool video! I can still say, after 10 years flying as an airline pilot, at the ripe old age of 33 that I still enjoy watching the takeoff from the window seat. My son (almost 4 years old) likes to sit on the window seat and do his own set of callouts, "Here we go!! Go faster airplane!!" And as we takeoff he enjoys the view.

Anyway, that was a great takeoff video. I am sorry you chose the competition and flew a "Fifi" jet, but the most important part is that you flew to PHX!! :hyped:

I especially like the flyover of the freeway and how all the little ants are marching, red and black antennae waving, they all do it the same, they all do it the same waaaaayyyyyy!

Take care,
First Officer for Southwest in Phoenix

(OK enough with the anonimity... call me Quidam... get your Latin dictionaries out for that one :coffee: )

P.S. Quick... guess the band!!

Thanks! FL350 didn't approve my landing video, maybe because it contained the FAs audio welcome-to-Phoenix and thank you comments...violated verbal copywright/legal stuff? Or, it didn't have enough compression.

I like your son's callouts...I do the same as a BIG kid!

Wanted to fly SW, but AW had the only non-stop flights from TPA to PHX...and, at the time of booking, the fares were a bargin. If it's any consolation, two days later, I flew SW to Jacksonville...a short flight, but a flight! :)

??? Question FO4, what's the scoop about using digital cameras/camcorders during take-off and landing (see my last post above)???

Now...on to "Quidam", all I can find is Cirque du Soleil, a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner. (no head with umbrella) The story of "Quidam" is a universal one, as the central character, Zoë, finds herself in a lonely, faceless world, but is offered the chance to renew her connection with family, with society and with humanity. Or, per Googlism, quidam is a Latin word for an anonymous passerby..and similar stuff. SEEMS we are back to Square One, FO4??? hahaha

Or, does it relate to the Polish band, Quidam:

Still keeping me guessing......

The ants marching is from The Dave Mathews Band... Ants Marching. Whenever I fly over a metropolitan area and see all those cars lined up during rush hour, I can't help but thing of the line in that song.

Oh and, it's okay you flew brand X... we will let it slide this time! :tiphat:

I know FO4's name and what he looks like and sounds like and that we like the same dish at Macaroni Grille!

I had a horribly witchy FA on my last leg yesterday - ATL to CHS that went on and on about turning cell phones off during flight and leaving them off. (More about that in my trip report).

Thanks...check out this earlier thread about what Michael said:

I got the file size compressed down to 14Meg, but that's still large and still would command a lot of bandwidth. You can download it from FL350, and use it anyway you want, personally or on this website. :)

I also have our Phoenix landing on video; compressed down to 22Meg (it's minute longer), but it wasn't approved by FL350 for any number of reasons...would not say which one.

Mark, we can do what we did with the other one on our homepage, link it to the video at FL350, and folks can view/download it from there :)

Chelle, anyway you want to use it is fine with me! :)

Oh yea Chelle... I figured that is how we would have to do it.

When we get enough, we can to a separate link to all the vids!

Thanks,

Mark

I had to go back to this posting and say thank you, Mark. On my recent series of flights from Tampa to Russia, this was a great help. I watched this video numerous times the days leading up to the flights.

When it was our turn to takeoff, it was like I was back at my desk watching this video - same side and about the same location on the plane, and pretty much the same scenery taking off to the south. I think I spent the whole takeoff thinking about how things were "so much like the video" to the point that I didn't even think about the takeoff itself. I felt more relaxed than I ever have before, on a plane (still had some thoughts running through my head, but nothing like before).

Awesome job!
Thank you again.:tiphat:

Hi Rob, you're welcome! That's why we're here...to help each other. :) Also, repetition, real or virtual, is a great tool to help for the FF! The "Holding Pattern" screen saver has done wonders to reduce flight anxiety for me; at work, I'm in a plane and flying every day...it's now feels as common as driving. http://www.idle-time.org/download.html

You obviously went a little farther that I did...Russia! Wow! I've been getting more and more confidence being part of this board that I'm actually considering a European trip next year. Never thought "that thought" would EVER enter and stay my mind!!!

Mark, that's a great video. I don't know how you get away with taking video during take-off and landing, though. ....

Hi Sean, this is from an earlier post on this thread:

"Each FA apparently has their own opinion on this...on the landing back in Tampa at night, the FA saw the "glowing" display of my camera and said, "SIR, you have to turn your camera OFF now."

When I took this camera recording, the FAs were in their seats for take-off. My camera is very small and not obvious during the day, especially when my body is blocking it from view as I am parallel to the window.

I won't get a chance this weekend on my Boston flight...it's at night and camera doesn't do well with available light in the dark. But I will for our trip to San Francisco Flight Fest..the flight out is the morning.
