Ever since Leslie posted the link to PHX ATC (Phoenix Air Traffic Control) I have tried to find other sites where you can listen to ATC. Are there any more out there?

Also, can someone decode the language? I remember discussions elsewhere about what "heavy" meant and other terms they use.

I think this would be a GREAT way to add to the tracking feature - to hear your friend's plane talking to ATC. :)

Thanks!
Kelley

Ubet.

(When they say "Cactus," that is the callsign for America West, Arizona's "hometown airline.")

Here's a link to a site with a long list of live ATC links:
www.thetracon.com/links/linkLIVE.htm (http://www.thetracon.com/links/linkLIVE.htm)

PHX Sky Harbor is there (must be the same one Les gave us above) and so are links to live audio from many major US airports, including Miami, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth and more. And there are a few international links as well; I just spent a few minutes listening to the pilot-tower transmissions in Sydney, Australia and trying to decipher the "Strine" radio lingo.

Cactus comes in here to AUS as well. Now there's somebody out there who calls themselves "Rasta" and I think they are military...

I will be glad to help explain some of the terminology also.

[Kelley]

==================

A "Heavy Jet" is any one that is capable of a maximum takeoff weight of 300,000 lbs or more. The heavier a plane, the more powerful is the wake vortices it generates off of its wing tips.

Pilots are required to use the term "Heavy" in their call sign, to both Approach Control and Departure Control, so that the ATC persons can ensure adequate separation behind those heavy jets, because of the strong wake turbulence.

I have tried and tried to access these sites but when I go to them all is quiet...and when I try to figure out what I need to do to make the noise come, it seems I would have to pay $19.99 a month in order to be able to listen to these ATC thingies. Does anyone know if that's the only way? If I could do it for free I would listen; I don't think it's worth $19.99 a month to me though.

So which aircraft types would fall into the heavy category? Obviously the 777 and the 763 - what about the 757 and 747?

I didn't pay to listen - just clicked on the links for each ATC tower I wanted to hear. Hmmmm.........
