... Maybe Bubba Gumps will be a little more casual.
There's one in Bayside in downtown Miami. I love those signs on your table - you flip the sign over when you need service...the first server that walks by is suppose to take care of your needs. More beer, please!

http://bubbagump.com/ That link has menu, etc... From what I recall, prices are 10-20 bucks for a meal. Very casual and fun atmoshphere. It is located at the end of the pier. If this spot works out, whoever is organizing can get us window seats!!! The view of the water and if I recall, alcatraz, was nice.

Awright, flight fest in my backyard! I will be there with bells on (and clothes, too).
I can volunteer to help get things set up if it is needed.
Do you like Mexican food? There is a GREAT mexican place in Tiburon (just N of SF in Marin County) right on the water with awesome views of the city. The best part is that it is a quick ferry ride from Fisherman's Wharf to the restaraunt's doorstep. The ferry ride passes between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The name of the place is Guayma's. Check it out at http://www.guaymas.com/
Although, if everyone would rather eat at the Wharf there are a bunch of options there as well. Bubba Gumps is good and there are other uniquely San Francisco seafood joints as well.
Mark (or anyone else) you can PM me for my cell# and we can discuss things as the date draws nearer.
I am really looking forward to meeting everyone! :hyped:

Chris,
You are hired! ha ha
That place sounds great! It has my vote... boat ride and all!
I am looking at coming in Friday night (Air fares are better) leaving on Sunday.
Can come into OAK or San Jose, but will most likely be OAK. Any suggestions on hotels? The ones around the wharf sound pricey, so I was thinking of staying further out, and renting a car, or taking a trolly, Bart, or a combine of both. Suggestion there will help also.

Monica - if you end up flying out of LGA let me know if you need a cheap place to park your car ($14 a day in a secure lot vs $24 a day at long term economy parking at LGA). My friend just paid $57 for 2 days and a few hours at LGA. YIKES!

Hi PMark...please excuse my Cal. ignorance, but why OAK or San Jose, instead of directly into San Fran?
No Problem Mark...
Because Southwest only goes into Oakland or San Jose... Not San Francisco.
If you read my testimonial... During that Christmas Flight 2003, Southwest (their people) went to the extreme to get me back in the air. Southwest Lynda, who is in Ontario... Captain Jeff... the deadheading pilot... and many more bent over backwards to help me. It was a great day, a very great day. Because SWA gave it their all to help me... I will always (when possible) fly them. Therefore... I HAVE to either go into Oakland or San Jose!
That is why you see a Southwest Jet in the banner at the top of this page. And a Southwest Jet at the top of the main website. These are personal choices of mine. And those banners hold special meanings to me.
Many think it is because Ray flys for SWA.... Nope... although Ray's partnership in Taking Flight just strengthens my support of SWA. I choose those photos and themes early on.
The only other two airlines that I have ever flown, since I started flying again was Delta to SLC and New Orleans and Virgin Atlantic to England.
I flew Delta because of the help that Michael (A CRJ Pilot at the time) was giving to the board. And I flew Virgin Atlantic because Southwest does not service England... YET!
And with Royd... aka Falcon supporting the board... when I am in Europe again... and have the opportunity to fly local... I will go on Easyjet.
I am a firm believer of supporting those who support the program.

Hi again, Mark! Thanks for the additional background! I flew Southwest today and I agree it's a great airline...and one of the most successful ones in today's market. From one of Ray's previous posts, I can't wait for SWA to start assigned seating. The luck of the draw causes normal people to act crazy to get a seat near the front. :loco: Today, one guy stood for almost 2 hours at the front of the "'A" line to be the first on board; several others just rudely butted in line with such innocent faces.

And does anyone have any information for Bart, or the Trolleys?

Found great rates on Delta - $262 RT from Tampa to San Francisco. Wow...coast to coast...a first for both of us! :happyguy: Also, looking forward to seeing California and the Pacific Ocean for the first time!
We will be arriving on Wednesday, March 30, and departing on Sunday, April 3rd. Don't know where we will be staying yet. Will be doing typical tourist stuff on the days before Flight Fest Saturday night.

Wow, this is going to be great. I will set things up at the restaurant and get the ferry info. Mark, I would suggest OAK over SJO since OAK is just a quick car ride over the Bay Bridge (you know, the one that partially collapsed during the '89 earthquake  :D  !)
Ferry info: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/schedule33.pdf The Tiburon schedule is at the bottom left corner of pg. 2. The last one departs for SF at 6:50pm. We could do an earlier dinner and head back to the city for drinks??
http://www.sfcablecar.com/ Trolly info
http://www.bart.gov/index.asp Bart info
http://sanfranciscohotels.itravel.bz/ Some hotel info...I would also suggest Orbitz, Lodging.com and the others. Good deals can be found.

OMG, I'm salivating over this menu  I already know what I'm having :D
And they have margaritas... I'm a happy girl :happyguy:
I always get the same thing...PLATILLO DE TAMALES SURTIDOS (Tamale platter). You get one pork, one chicken and one plantain/cactus tamale. Mmmmm...washes down really nice with a pitcher of maragaritas (or a shot of Don Julio with a beer chaser).
Also, another suggestion:
If people want to hit a bar once returning to SF, the Buena Vista is a great one located in Fisherman's Wharf. Here is there website http://www.thebuenavista.com/index2.html They are famous for their Irish Coffee  and they have Guinness for Chelle!! ;)

Monica... Stay away from John Wayne if you can...
1. After a certain hour... I think 9:00 PM all airport operations cease. So if your flight is late... you are going somewhere else.
2. They have a very odd way of landing and taking off there for noise abatement.
3. Fares are usually a bit higher there.
LAX is just fine... or if all options there do not work out... try ONT, it is only about 45 minutes from Ratland
And it is about an 8 hour drive from LAX to SFO... or just do a SWA flight for $39.00 each way! You can fly up with Jeff and I and watch me hand out peanuts!
Any pros or cons flying into LAX or John Wayne if we go to Disney.Or let me rephrase that. When we go to Disney. :mickey:

Hey Mark,
I just booked the flight. We should have an awesome view. I have never flown into San Fran. Do they fly over along the coast? Do we need to sit on the right of the plane for a view?
My sis in-law will likely be watching my kids. If she does, she will pick them up in Ontario. We plan on meeting at Oscars for lunch around 1 pm. Maybe you can meet us for lunch:thumbsup: OR.... We can meet you at your work and she can drop us at the airport so we dont have to pay 45 bucks for parking. She likely could pick us up too. Let me know if thats OK.

In my research using Orbitz and car rental websites, Payless was the best deal. I start with Orbitz for research, then I usually book directly with the airline/car websites for the lowest cost.
For the 4 days we will be in SF, Wed.-Sun., Payless Car Rental had the best rate for Intermediate: total with all taxes is $96. Enterprise and Alamo were the next lowest at around $115. :beep:
http://www.paylesscarental.com/
OK, the car is booked, but I don't know anything about SF. My preference would be to "not" have a car, but use hotel shuttles and public transportation to get around....and maybe on one day to take a Tour Bus for sightseeing. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!

StPeteMark,
Check out an earlier post of mine in this thread. I put in links for BART and the cable cars. The main public transportation system in SF is MUNI ( http://www.sfmuni.com/cms/mms/home/home50.htm ). They are a great system and can get you all around the city for $1.25. You even get to sit next to really interestingly smelling people!! What more could you want?
Seriously, it is a great system. You really don't need a car to get around SF.
Chris
Feel free to PM me for my cell if you have any direct questions.
Also, I have found some really good car deals through Budget at both OAK and SFO(I USED to rent cars to go everywhere instead of flying :) )

Thanks, Chris! San Fransisco is so overwhelming for us now that I'm sure I (we) will have more questions for you. I've got to explore these sites to see where and how these systems work together. Hopefully, we can cancel the car reservation and ride with the smelly people - LOL! :) (I just read that SF in NOT car friendly due to short supply of spaces and enforced restrictions.)
Now, moving on to hotels....can you suggest a good general location where the typical hotel has their own airport shuttle AND has good general proximity to public transit to the popular tourist attractions?
Our last stop will be Fisherman's Wharf with our Flight Fest activities. Looking through our AAA Tour Book, some of the other interesting places appear to be: downtown, Chinatown, Ghiradelli Square, the Golden Gate Bridge and Park, and Nob Hill. We'll have half-days on Wed. and Sat., and full days for Thursday and Friday. Can you suggest other must-see places to go?
Thanks a bunch!!!

...hotels....can you suggest a good general location where the typical hotel has their own airport shuttle AND has good general proximity to public transit to the popular tourist attractions?...
Here I go talking to myself again! :D After looking at the maps and hotel descriptions, it appears such a combination doesn't exist. Most of what we want to see is in and around Fishermans Wharf and downtown...however, the airport is 20 miles south...no shuttle. However, the combination of the BART/Muni train/subway and a short taxi ride is available to this area. So, we will be cancelling the rental car...thanks, Chris for the public transportation info! :tiphat:
We'll be staying at the Holiday Inn Fishermans Wharf (not HI Express) at 1300 Columbus Ave., which is within walking distance to the Wharf and cable car turnarounds. Each room also has high-speed internet access.
Looking forward to another great Flight Fest! Hope many can make it!

No problem Mark! The city itself is only something like 5 square miles so you are really close to everything no matter where you stay. You picked a good spot in Fisherman's wharf. It is centrally located and there is a trolley that runs along the Embarcadero which will give you access to the downtown area. A lot of the other attractions are in walking distance.
The other spots you mentioned are all great. There are shuttles and tour buses all over the FW area that will take you to and over the bridge (w/o paying the $5 toll:shocked: ) Chinatown is great, especially if you like Chinese food. Union Square is another popular attraction and they have lots of shopping (you may or may not want to mention that one!) The last thing I would reccomend is making your way up to twin peaks. It overlooks the entire city and, on a clear day, is a fabulous view.
You are right, too in saying that SF is car UNfriendly. Parking is really tight and you have to pay almost everywhere (downtown can be $30 for the day). Enforcement? I am single handedly supporting the city on my parking citations alone!!
I will send more latere as I think of it...

Mark, isn't it cool that you are now in a position where you can focus on the trip itself and all the great things you are going to do while there. I haven't been to SF in a few years, love it and reading these posts made me so excited to go back. And to go back thinking about being there rather than getting there!!! It's so relaxing now that I no longer have to help the pilots fly.
Hi Monica, YES, IT IS!!!!!!!!!! As you know, I made a commitment to myself and worked hard (and keep working) to get to this point...thanks to the resources on this board and the great support from it's members. The airport is 21 minutes from the wharf according to Mapquest...

So we will do a late lunch, early dinner.... If Breakfast/Lunch is called Brunch... is this called "Lunner"?
Anyhows, I will get in contact with Chris and work it out.
See Mon... It can all work!
Mon, are you flying out of SFO?? Because I think we're going to the restaurant in the afternoon, the last ferry coming back to the wharf is around 6:50pm I think, then we were going to head off for drinks.. so, it should be early enough you could probably join us at the restaurant? I'm not sure how far the airport is from the Wharf, but it can't be more than 30 minutes....

After a couple weeks of writing abstracts and digging out of heaps of projects, I am back! Were you all worried that your SF planner was MIA?
I have made reservations for April 2 at Guaymas in Tiburon for 2pm. That way Monaca should have plenty of time to make it to SFO for her flight home. It shouldn't take anymore than 20-30 minutes to get to SFO from the Wharf (traffic depending, as always!). I will look into the ferry schedules and see if I can reserve some tix in advance.
I will read thought the posts to "catch up" and see if there are any more questions I can help with.
I told the restaurant 20 people. Can we have one more tally to see how many there are of us so far?
Looking forward to meeting all of you!!:hyped:

Here is some ferry info...
The Blue and Gold Fleet departs from Pier 41 in Fisherman's Wharf. There is a boat that departs from there at 12:35 pm which would put you in Tiburon at 1:25pm. There are some nice small shops around the town of Tiburon that would kill the 1/2 hour or so. Sam's is a place next door to Guayma's that is famous for their Bloody's. There is also a really nice walking path along the shore of the Bay.
I would strongly suggest advance purchase of tickets since it could possibly be full. The ticket number is 415.705.5555 and cost around $14 for round trip. I will be meeting everyone at the restaurant since I don't live too far away and wouldn't want to be on a boat with a bunch of dang tourists ;) ;) .
Here is a pdf of the ferry schedule with phone numbers...

Anyone figure out how to book this on line? Webpage says $14.50 RT; or $2.25 extra per ticket for phone orders? The only on-line link I found (home page) was for one-way tix and total price would be $17.00 each, if 2 one-ways = 1RT.

Interesting point Chelle! I will figure out a way to ride the Ferry back to the wharf and get back home. I think my wife will probably meet us at the wharf for drinks and then drive us back home...or I just drive into SF and ride the ferry both ways! Either way, I will be there

Hey Mark,
I called today, and they said there is no way to reserve online. Just by phone. But the guy said, that ferry never fills up, so you can just walk up and buy a ticket. But I bought over the phone anyways just to be on the safe side.

I agree, Scoma's is waaaay too high. We went there for my birthday this past January and we definitely dug deep into our pockets. Something more casual and reasonably priced sounds like it would be ideal. I only live 1½ hours south from SF, so I might even be able to make it! Oops...wait...I have to help chaperone a a little party my daughter's friend is having. She's turning 13 and heaven forbid, there will be BOYS there!
Well, I definitely will be thinking of all of you!
Cool Jeff!!
I love the Wharf too, and I don't even like seafood  When I was there last October we had lunch at a place called Scoma's, it was really nice but outrageously expensive $$ (even though the Crab Louis salad I had was delish! ) Maybe Bubba Gumps will be a little more casual.

And, the F-line which are the old historic streetcars (NOT cable) will take you down Market to the Embarcadero right down to the Wharf. So, if you were so inclined, you could take this up from Fisherman's Wharf to see Union Square and the sites in and around downtown and back again. It's also a cheap and fun way to ride. I highly recommend it! No car is needed in SF.:pompoms:
StPeteMark,
Check out an earlier post of mine in this thread.

The Argonaut is the newest of the Kimpton Group. Great hotel. Close to Ghirardelli Square. My husband's hobby/sometimes weekend job is timing 10k races, marathons, swims, etc. and he's stayed there twice. Our 3 daughters went along to help and they also loved the hotel. It has a nautical theme and the building was originally an old fruit cannery built in 1907. Some of the rooms even have brick walls. I can best describe the guest rooms as "crisp" and tastefully done in blues and white reminiscent of ships and sailing. Also, a bit narrow. And, they are pet friendly!
I did it!!! We won't have to camp on the beach. We're staying at the Argonaut hotel. It looks like it's right in the middle of evertyhing in Fisherman's Wharf.
Now, I just have to figure out meeting up with you guys.
and if you guys could get it to not rain for the week we are there---that would be nice.:sunshine: Thanks.

I happen to love staying in the Union Square area. It's right in the "thick of things" and close to shopping and restaurants. Also, you can hop on a cable car or bus very easily. And, on Market St. you can catch an antique street car that will take you down to the Wharf for a very reasonable price (compared to cable cars). Anyway, this is my "base". From there, I might spend time in Chinatown, which is an easy walk. Then one day I'll go down to Fisherman's Wharf and check out Pier 39 and Wharf in general. We climbed to the top of Coit Tower one of the last times we were there. Great view of the city and Alcatraz. I've also taken the streetcar to the Castro District and Haight-Asbury, as well as Cow Hollow. But, I just love walking around downtown the best and blending in with "the locals". Mind you, for those who aren't used to the sight of homeless folks here and there, please don't be alarmed. For the most part, they're harmless and it's best just to walk on by. (Or you could strike up a conversation like I have---especially those who have animals with them.)
Of course, you might want to stay down near the Wharf if that's where you'll be spending most of your time. Tuscany Inn is nice. So is the Sheraton. Very centrally located a couple blocks from the Wharf. Oh, and you HAVE to have a Boudin sourdough "bowl" of clam chowder soup while you're down there! That bread is truly the BEST!
Since I can't do the whole day---I'm trying to figure out where would be the most logical place to stick my nose in ...
Any suggestions from those who know what they are doing?
I just booked our hotel today for Carmel(we're spending two nights before we head up to SF) and it made me really excited about the trip.
It's really nice to be focused on the plans rather than the means of getting there.
Tomorrow, I'm working on getting a hotel in SF so I'll hopefully know where we'll be.
I know Jeff recommended the Embassy Suites. Anyone partial to a particular neighborhood in SF? Any we should try to avoid?
See you guys in a week from today!!!

The Actual Fest:
We are meeting at Fisherman's Wharf at the Blue and Gold Fleet. The Blue and Gold Fleet departs from Pier 41 in Fisherman's Wharf. There is a boat that departs from there at 12:35 pm which will put us in Tiburon at 1:25pm. So we will meet at Pier 41 at 12:00 PM

We will take the 5:15 ferry back, which puts us back at the Wharf by 5:40pm. That should put you back in plenty of time to get to SFO by 8:00 PM.
Once I get all the cell phone numbers and hotel info together, I will PM that to everyone.

Hi StPeteMark!
Believe me, if there was a way to get out of my prior "commitment", you definitely will see me up there!
As for the best place to have that clam chowder, I would go to the actual Boudin Bakery (and cafe). When we were there in January they were building a new place on the Wharf. It might be finished now. http://www.boudinbakery.com/ Just go in and order the sourdough bowl with clam chowder. Yum!! And, the bread itself is to die for! I like to buy one of those round loaves and just eat it plain. It's that good! What a unique sourdough flavor. I wish they sold it in my town of Santa Cruz. Anyway, they have 3 Boudin Bakeries on the Wharf, but I think the new one they're building looks like it's going to be nice. Think of me as you're slurping down that hot clam chowder. And, don't forget to EAT that bowl!

Did everyone (but me) buy advance tickets for the ferry? I just found out that Alcatraz ferry is sold out till Sun. I'm going to check on the other ones but just curious what everyone else did. We had a great day here today. I had put Mark in charge of the weather and he did a great job this week...
We don't have ours either. The Alcatraz ferry serves San Francisco's #1 top tour attraction - the Alcatraz facility. The ferry to Tiburon is another one, which the guy told PMark is typically not full. There appears to be no major commercial pull at Tiburon. I guess we're taking our chances based on this. We'll be buying ours early Sat. morning...going to wine country tomorrow, a 9-hr tour. We'll keep our fingers crossed for good luck for all.
