:dunno OK..it was my lunch hour and I was sitting in my attorneys office (she is away on business), relaxing and looking out her window..and I saw the oddest (and scary) thing.

What looked like 2 jumbo jets, they where far away, but they looked very big. OK..so anyway...the where flying, pretty much on top of each other..looked like mere feet away. I have never seen this before, and It didn't look like army planes flying in formation, they where extremely close, one right behind the other, practically on top of each other. I thought I saw smoke coming out of the back of the latter one, but I'm not sure. :blink :scratch

Any body have any ideas/clues at to what they might have been, and why they were flying so close?

Yikes, wonder what that was about. Is there anything in the local news?

I've been looking, even called up the NY Daily News..nobody knows anything..I know I saw what I saw..and it was a bit odd to see them flying that close...who knows..maybe it was something, but it's not going to be reported because nothing really bad happened. I don't think I'll ever find out what it was.

They where either flying into Newark or LGA, at least I think they where, that was the direction they where heading, as all the other planes.

I'm perplexed :dunno

Do you have an Air Force Base nearby?

We have one here in CHS (right beside the airport) and we see the HUGE cargo planes (C-17s) flying overhead and quite often they are very close together (or appear to be from our angle of view) or one right behind the other. They do "touch and go"s over and over and over on the airport runways.

Could that be it?

Were you able to make out what airline they were?

YankssRule

I'm not sure how close the airforce base is...but the planes looked too big to be airforce..they looked like passenger airliners.

If I should hear anything, I will let you know. Otherwise, it will most likely stay a mystery.

Thanks for all the help on this. Just weirded out about it.

Hmmm. That's strange...

I know that whenever anything out of the ordinary happens over here in the UK (so, 'near misses' etc) we usually don't find out about it until a year or so later (after the reports/paperwork etc). Let us know if you find anything out!

It sounds like a disabled plane and a "towplane"....or a "tugplane..." But I guess they don't really do that.

Just to let you peeps know..I haven't heard anything yet about what it was that I saw...and who knows..maybe it was a "towline" type of thing :rotflmao . After all, one of them did have some black smoke coming out of the back. :uhoh

Guess it will stay a myster. Oh well. :dunno
Thanks for all your help my friends.

The KC-10 tanker used by the Air Force is essentially a DC-10 airliner. They can refuel each other and usually do so at mid altitudes (180-290). They actually connect when the plane in front plugs a pole with wings on it into the lower plane behind. The bodies of the planes are separated by only 20 feet.

Or, it might have been two planes heading the same direction separated by 1000 feet.

Ray :yoohoo

I was just going to mention refueling. I was watching a TV show and it made me think that that is possibly what I saw. :banana

Thanks for the info.

But Ray...do they refuel that close the Manhattan? They weren't flying directly over Manhattan, but close enough for me to see them. Do you know of any way that I can find out what it was that I saw? Because there is nothing in the news or papers or anything. :dunno

Thanks.

I found two articles about military jets refueling over Manhattan. These are older articles, one right after 9/11 and one from March, 2002. But perhaps this is still going on to some degree??? Very interesting, to say the least!

Ok, this is going to sound really stupid, but.....

Isn't it easier to fuel on the ground?!?! :duck

I doubt it could have been refueling tankers.

If you saw them from a great distance, chances are they were making approaches to parallel runways at JFK and one was at least a thousand feet further away from you, than the other one.

At that distance, it could easily appear that both were the same distance aways from you, making it appear one was on top of the other one.

Of course, it is possible that ATC screwed up and got two of them way too close together. That happened to me at LAX once, and we almost collided.

Great. I fly into LAX in 4 days. YIKES! Isn't there some sort of avoidance system in place for that, Bob?? Or are we really at the mercy of the humans watching the screen at ATC?

I know every time we fly into ATL and it is clear you can usually see airplanes landing on parallel runways. It used to make me nervous until I realized that we were as far apart as we were.

It must have been scary Janet but I am sure there will be a good explanation somewhere out there!:scratch

ASC....these planes definitely where not thousands of miles apart...they where extremely close. They wheren't that far from me to be able to tell if there was a large distance between them, and there wasn't.
