american airlines I have to go from Boston to new orleans in April. Actually I would prefer to fly from PVD, but Boston has a nonstop on AA and I love those nonstops. It's an MD-80 which I have flown before. I know AA is probably fine, but has anyone flown them?

Re: american airlines I love AA. I usually fly them and I have not had any bad experiences. They have been very good with being on schedule and whenever I don't get luggage it is usually with another airline. Also I haven't felt much turbulence when on their flights, maybe coincidence, maybe they know something extra to keep us out of the bad patches of air. Anyways, I like them alot. They have gotten bad about meals and now you don't even get a pillow on shorter flights but I can deal with that. Means more to me to be on schedule and not have cancelled flights.

AA I've flown them lots of times. They were the "official airline" of the company I used to work for. I even chartered planes from them for that company's annual employee ski trip. I have no complaints about them, other than the fact that they have always tried to destroy any other airline (in a business sense, of course) that tried to compete with them in Dallas. Their planes are nice, their crews are generally nice, and they seem to be a little more willing to bump me up to first-class. Plus, who doesn't like an airline with the guts to use the initials AA?

Re: american airlines Hey Spiff,

I've flown AA many times over the years including flying into Venezuela and Guatemala with them. No complaints here. I think they are a very good airline. -----------------

Re: american airlines Wow, thanks you guys. And so fast too.

Now who can tell me about New Orleans? The conference I'm going to is at a Marriott (? I think) that is apparently right in the middle of things. Is there something called Riverwalk? I think that's where it is. I think it's the weekend of the Jazz Festival, too...?

Anyone want to come?

Re: american airlines When you go to Bourbon Street, and you will, be sure to hold on to your purse. When sitting at a bar on Bourbon Street, do NOT sit on a stool next to the street. Many of the bars are open right out to the street and you are within 4 feet of the sidewalk. I once saw a man place his camera on the bar next to him and within 30 seconds someone walking on the streey grabbed it and ran.

Enjoy yourself. Go see the Aquarium, it's the best one I've been to in the US. Go through the French Quarter. And by all means, EAT some of that wonderful creole and cajun food!

Be careful

Re: american airlines My sister lives just outside of New Orleans, and it is a fun town. Ken gave some good advice. I will only add to NOT go north of Bourbon Street. North is away from the water.

Have fun,

Mark

Mark is right I love New Orleans, but Mark nailed it. My mental map of the French Quarter goes something like this as you go away from the river:

Mississippi River...
Nifty historical sites...
Antique shops I can't afford, but like to look in...
Places with great coffee and beignets...
Cool hotels and shops...
Jazz, booze, racy shops, occasionally topless women, beads and mild voodoo (Bourbon St.)...
Hookers, drugs, and serious voodoo...
@#%$, complete with demons...
I-10...
Stuff nobody came to see...
Lake Pontchartrain.

The only thing north of Bourbon Street that you need to see are the cemeteries, and only in the daytime, and only in a group. Best to go on an organized tour. The Garden District, south of the French Quarter, is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Re: Mark is right Sengelin hit it as well. I forgot to mention the cemetaries (Cities of the Dead). Very interesting stuff. Maybe you can go see Marie Lavieu's grave. (The Queen of voodoo). People still knock on her grave and leave offerings when they need a favor.

Here's a neat site that talks about her and has other links as well. Marie Lavieu (http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/3131/voodoo.html)

Re: Mark is right Spiffy - when ya going??? Our babysitter just moved to New Orleans. I miss her already! My Grandmother is cajun so I looooooooove the food (although it is a pain being allergic to onions and trying to eat cajun food)...

Also, as far as American goes - that is ALL that my boss EVER wants to fly. He is used to the "finer things" in life and in HIS opinion American is his favorite airline (of course he does always fly first class....). I do know that the American Super 80's do NOT offer movies though... That's the only bummer.

(1/14/05 2:42 pm)Re: Mark is right Movies are not important. I can amuse myself or read. Safety is important.

I'm going from 4/28-5/4. I assume it will be summery, 70s-80s weather there then? I have been advised I must eat a beignet. I don't drink coffee so I probably won't try the coffee there. Good tip on the thievery, Mad. I walk the streets of Boston every day so I have all my important stuff in one of those waist packs firmly attached to my waist. They'd have to kill me to get it off.

I think, actually, that I will be stuck inside a lot listening to people give talks and papers and such. But I have never been to New Orleans and any touristy tips are appreciated!

I will return the favor if you ever come to new england - I know most of the places here that anyone would want to go.

Southern RI, the Cape, and Maine are excellent places in july and august to escape the hot southern weather...

(1/14/05 2:52 pm) Re: american airlines Spiff -

For Heaven's Sake!!! Don'tcha remember - my Imaginary Friend introduced us to the MD80!

Seriously, it'd been years since I'd been on one, and the only reason I HAD to book it was because of the scheduling with the rest of the Family. But, I was truly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Very pleasant surprise! Just be very sure to sit as far front as you can get. The engines are in the back, and it can be pretty loud back there. I loved the "zippy" take-off, though.

And, also remember that Capn Steve (The Other Board) is in the process, as we speak, of training on them. If he didn't think it was safe, he sure as h - ll would find something else to "drive". He's already got 2200 hours on it.

It's going to be fine. Actually, I'm looking forward to your take on them.

I especially like the 2 x 3 config., as you never have to worry about a stranger in your aisle. It can be just you and Duncan in a whole aisle! YIPPEE!!!

Re: American Airlines I fly Amerian Airlines all the time - about 35k miles on them last year. Obviously, I feel ok with them. I also fly on the MD80 all the time. They are one of my favorite planes, actually. I try to sit on the bulkhead row (row 7) on the two seat side. Very quiet, smooth ride up there. Row 7 and 8 are held for airport check-in, so you can often get them if you ask.

Have a good trip!
